By 9 a.m., the morning rush had subsided at Lee-Davis High School, which saw 600 voters pass through the polling place in a two-hour period.

Vehicles were said to have been lined around the building waiting to park and head to the precinct on Mechanicsville Turnpike.
Cadets with the school’s JROTC program stood ready to offer an umbrella, as well as a cup of coffee and a donut to those coming to the polls.

Senior Daniel Cox chatted with his grandfather, John Cox, and Joe Green, the president of the program, as a light rain fell.
Voters were entering and exiting at a steady pace.

John Cox said he and his grandson were “out here when they opened up.”

With Daniel Cox attired in his dress…

Registrar: heavy turnout expected
By Melody Kinser
.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Heavy voter turnout is the norm for Hanover County, according to Voter Registrar Robert M. Ostergren, who expects 95 percent turnout on Tuesday.

Last Wednesday, Ostergren said the number of registered voters in Hanover County was 67,835 as of Oct. 20.

He said absentee balloting is showing a marked increase, with “The State Board [of Elections] encouraging people to vote absentee.”

“I know we’re expecting a pretty heavy turnout. Hanover generally turns out pretty well anyway — at least for a presidential [election].”

Ostergren, who has been serving as the county’s voter registrar since April 1, 1987, said “It’s wearing us all out.”

He pointed out…

It’s your right —so get out and vote
Melody Kinser

I couldn’t even venture a guess as to how many times I have written this particular article, but it is so important that it bears repeating as election day nears.

Voting is your right, your privilege, your responsibility.

My parents instilled in my sister and me the significance of the election process — and because of that I have never missed the opportunity to cast my vote.

Few excuses merit voicing when it comes to going to the polls. It’s not like they’re only open a couple of hours.

Polling places open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m., so there are plenty of hours available Tuesday for you to do your part.

I’ve waited in line to vote before, but it never crossed my mind to…

Obama drama
Ken Odor

We’ve been seeing a lot this over the last week or so as the freshman Illinois senator’s detractors have called attention to his two-decades long connection with a controversial Chicago preacher.

All the hoorah prompted the senator to give a major address on race in America, in which he distanced himself from some of Rev. Wright’s more extreme statements, without severing his ties with him or the Chicago church Obama has attended for so many years.

The speech satisfied many, but, of course, failed to satisfy others. Endless debate filled the TV talk shows and the print media as to whether Obama had gone far enough to prove he is truly a “post racial,” candidate.

What’s missing again…

Democrat primary voters outnumber GOP in Hanover
By Ken Odor

Hanover voters turned out strong in last week’s Democratic and Republican primaries.
And unlike Chesterfield County, where some voters had to write their choices on paper, Hanover election workers prepared ahead of time so that there were enough Democratic ballots on hand.
Ernest H. Mason, secretary of the electoral board, said they anticipated the usual heavy Republican turn out until they saw the results of Super Tuesday.
“After Super Tuesday all that changed,” said Mason.”  We ordered about 8,000 more Democratic ballots.”
Election Day turnout started heavy and was steady all day at many precincts.
“We had people waiting in line at 6 a.m.,” said Mechanicsville…
