The third trial for a man accused in the death of a 6-year-old in 1980 will start with jury selection on Monday in Hanover County Circuit Court.
After serving 15 years for abducting two sisters, John Bradley Crawford was charged with first-degree murder and abduction with the intent to defile in October 2006.
Hypothermia claimed the life of Alexander Paul Glanz of Henrico County. He died sometime between Dec. 3 and 6.
The boy’s body was discovered by a man walking on Dec. 6, 1980, on Cold Harbor Road in a field near trees. Clad only in socks and underwear, he had been sexually assaulted.
Judge J. Overton Harris will preside over Crawford’s trial, which is expected to last a week.
As Crawford, who is lodged in the Pamunkey Regional Jail, awaits his third trial, this will be the second time Commonwealth’s Attorney R.E. “Trip” Chalkley III will prosecute the case.
Chalkley said he would not comment until the trial ends.
The first trial was handled by then-Commonwealth’s Attorney Kirby Porter.
Crawford entered a guilty plea in 1981 to abducting two Mechanicsville area sisters from their home. The girls were 10 and 15 years old at the time.
He pleaded to simple abduction and intent to defile.
The sisters survived, and one testified at one of his previous trials.
Crawford’s defense is being headed up by Richmond attorney Ed Riley. In September, he said his client was “anxious to get this matter resolved” and “looking forward to his day in court.”
A school bus driver saw Glanz walk toward his door after getting off the bus on Dec. 3, 1980. When he got home, he was supposed to have called his mother.
When Diane Glanz arrived at home, she had not heard from her son and found his school books on a bongo drum inside the door.
Crawford’s previous trials — held in March 2007 and March 2008 — both ended in mistrials.
In April, Chalkley announced he would try the case a third time.
