The folks at Scot’s Landing, a new neighborhood off Georgetown Road, celebrated the founding of their new Neighborhood Watch program recently.

It was the 125th such program in Hanover, said Scott Spradlin of the Hanover Sheriff’s Office. Thirteen were started last year, and four have been established so far in 2008.

“I think it’s an absolute necessity,” said Heather Taylor, Neighborhood Watch Coordinator at their kickoff event June 12. “The neighborhood is filling up with young children.”

Heather and her husband Charlie moved in with their two sons almost a year ago.

Taylor said the only crime so far has been some minor vandalism.

The neighborhood has 66 lots, with about 20 houses already built.

Brooks Ballance is the president of the neighborhood homeowners association.

“I was out there last night with the posthole digger putting in the sign,” he said.

The neighbors gathered for the unveiling of the sign and then celebrated with snacks, while Spradlin fingerprinted kids and gave out whistles and other crime fighting tools.

Editor’s Note:
Hanover seems to generate the kind of neighborhoods where folks join together to look out for each other. Maybe that’s one of the reasons the crime rate is low.
