Area students receive scholarships and diplomas

REGAN SMITH

Three 2009 graduates of Lee-Davis High School were awarded fine arts scholarships at Milligan College.

Erin Raines, Jacqueline Johnson and Regan Smith, all of Mechanicsville, plan to attend the Tennessee-based college this fall.

Milligan is a private Christian liberal arts college located near Johnson City, Tenn.

Raines was awarded the scholarship based on outstanding piano performance. The daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Raines, she is a member of the Fairmount Christian Church.

Johnson was awarded the scholarship based on her outstanding her photography skills. The daughter of Steven and Vivian Johnson, she is a
member of the Fairmount Christian Church.

Smith was awarded the scholarship based on outstanding vocal performance. The daughter of Joey and Julie Smith, she is a member of the Fairmount Christian Church.

BEKKA CONZ

Bekka Conz, the daughter of Peter and Donna Conz of Mechanicsville, was named to the Honors List at Mary Baldwin College for the spring semester 2009.

The Honors List is the achievement of a 3.75 grade point average or better for the semester.

Rebekka also was a starting member of the Mary Baldwin College softball team.

CARMEN FRANCK

Carmen Franck of Montpelier received the Herman and Mildred Corder Award during the recent Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine Graduation Awards Ceremony.

The Herman and Mildred Corder Award is an award established to provide funds to Virginia residents achieving academically, involved in community service, who have good character and financial need.

Five Mechanicsville residents graduated from Radford University at the end of the spring semester.

Earning bachelor of science degrees were Ashley Katherine Seay, interior design; Jovan Edward Coker, media studies; Gregory Michael MacDougall, exercise, sport and health education; and Allison Ingalls Smith, fashion.

Earning a bachelor of business degree was Elizabeth Honor Fodill, marketing.

CATHERINE E. SMITH

James Madison University’s President Linwood H. Rose named Catherine Elizabeth Smith to the President’s List for the spring semester of the 2008-2009 academic year, an honor reserved for those select few students who achieve the highest academic marks.

Smith earned a 4.0 GPA (grade point average) for the semester. The daughter of Harvey and Martha Smith of Mechanicsville, Smith is a rising senior at JMU majoring in Spanish and planning to pursue her master’s degree in secondary education after graduating next year.

Five Mechanicsville students were accepted by Hampden-Sydney College and began classes in August:

—Justin Laine Denton – enrolled with a Dean’s Award, is a graduate of Hanover High School and is the son of Heath and Kathy Denton.

—Steven T. Fogleman – enrolled with an Alumni Award, is a graduate of Hanover High School and is the son of Bob Fogleman.

—Kenneth Earl Fryman – enrolled with a Dean’s Award, is a graduate of Hanover High School and is the son of Trisha Allen.

—Tyler Pritchett Grogan ¬– enrolled with an Alumni Award, is a graduate of Hanover High School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David P. Grogan.
—Tyler Douglas White – enrolled with a Dean’s Award, is a graduate of Atlee High School and is the son of Kerry and Kathy White.

JESSICA M. PHELPS

Jessica Michelle Phelps, the daughter of Michael and Norma Phelps of Mechanicsville, received a bachelor of science degree from James Madison University on May 3, 2008. She graduated cum laude, having majored in interdisciplinary liberal studies with a minor in elementary education.

She received her master’s degree in the art of teaching from JMU on May 8, 2009.
