Starting Saturday, Dec. 12, the Ashland Firehouse Theater will screen movies and be the scene of other community events.
The first season opens at 7 p.m. with Frank Capra’s Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life.“ A matinee is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13.
Made in 1947, the movie stars James Stewart as a man who wishes he had never been born—until he meets the Christmas Angel, played by Henry Travers, who grants his wish. The cast also features Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Beulah Bondi and Lionel Barrymore.
The movie theater is located in the large front bay of the old Ashland firehouse on the corner of Duncan Street and Hanover Avenue.
The Ashland Community Foundation is renovating and retrofitting the space as a theater with a large fixed screen, quality projection and audio equipment, carpeting, insulation and all the updates necessary to give audiences an enjoyable movie experience.
According to the ACT, the building permit allows seating for an audience of 125. Concessions will be available at each performance.
In addition to “It’s a Wonderful Life,“ this month’s schedule for the Ashland Firehouse Theater includes: 7 p.m. Dec. 19, “The Shop Around the Corner” (1940); and 3 p.m. Dec. 20, “A Christmas Carol” (1951).
Regular admission prices to December movies will be $5 per person. Thanks to local sponsors Ashland ACE Hardware and Phillips Woodcrafters, the ticket cost for the Dec. 12 and 13 movies will be discounted.
