Rain or shine, the Town of Ashland will be celebrating its 150th anniversary

Rain or shine, the Town of Ashland will be celebrating its 150th anniversary Saturday.

Kicking off the opening ceremony at 12:30 p.m. at Day Football Field at Randolph-Macon College will be a 400-piece marching band consisting of Hanover County’s four high school bands — Atlee, Hanover, Lee-Davis and Patrick Henry.

A new time capsule presentation is planned from 1 to 2 p.m. as part of the opening ceremony. According to Co-Chairman Lorie Foley, “the last time capsule is ‘lost.’ It’s been documented, but no one has found it.”

Between 1 and 2 p.m., 200 music students, led by John M. Gandy music teacher Susan Winckler, will perform. Also scheduled between 1 and 2 p.m. are the dedication of the birthday cake sculpture and a special Ukrop’s cake, designed by Chef Jim Goodman. Both will take place on the football field. The 6-foot-tall, 4-foot-wide sculpture will weigh in around 400 pounds. It is being designed by Nancy Cozart, the lead art specialist for Hanover County Public Schools, and built by AC Bruce. Art students from throughout the county created hand-sculpted faces, kiln-fired them and place them on the cake as “frosting.” After the ceremony, the birthday cake sculpture will be placed at the Ashland Library.

At 2 p.m., 150 birthday cakes will be available by the fountain for everyone. A dance-off through the ages, hosted by Radio Disney!, will get under way at 2 p.m. in the children’s and parents’ area by the library off Henry Street.

Antique assessments will be offered free of charge at 2 p.m. in the Exhibition Hall of Crenshaw Gym, with antique experts Sumpter Priddy III, Bill Irvin of Motley’s Antiques and Mary Beth Rabung, all have Ashland/Hanover connections. From 2 to 5:30 p.m., the Exhibition Hall will feature several exhibits, including history, videos, displays, photos, etc.

An Old Dominion Barn Dance with the Workman Twins and Ginger Stanley (Sunshine Sue’s daughter) will begin at 3 p.m. on the stage in front of the fountain.

Also at 3 p.m., Ashland History in Drama and Song with Randolph-Macon’s Barclay DuPriest and Company will offer a “history” of Ashland, as told by students with assistance from Tom Bass and R-MC’s Anthony Keitt.

Serving with Foley as co-chairman is Sue Watson. Ashland Mayor Faye Prichard and Randolph-Macon College President Robert Lindgren are honorary chairmen. Rob Stiles is president of the Ashland 150 Steering Committee.
