Robert Bluford Jr. celebrated his 90th birthday in grand style this month, in the midst of a project dear to his heart.

He was honored during an Illumination Ceremony at Historic Polegreen Church off Rural Point Road on Dec. 5.

Bluford marked 90 years the day before.

He is the founder of the Historic Polegreen Church Foundation.

To recognize Bluford for his support of the church, as well as a significant birthday, a portrait painted by well-known portrait artist Steve Craighead of Manassas was unveiled.

The portrait was commissioned by the Foundation and sponsored by Martha Newell.

Foundation Board member Harry Warthen and Bluford’s son, Robert Bluford III, addressed the gathering of about 75.

“I am at a loss for words,” said Bluford on the presentation of the portrait, “God saw fit to allow me have a part in bringing back to light a great unsung hero, Samuel Davies,” said Bluford.

Davies was instrumental in the Great Awakening movement of the 18th century in the Colonies, and pastor at the original Polegreen Church.

In addition to his portrait, Bluford was presented with a birthday cake, topped with candles representing 90.

Music was provided by the Williamsburg Musick Fife & Drums.
