With a goal of running to promote fitness, family and community involvement, as well as school spirit, Mechanicsville Elementary School hosted its first annual Mechanicsville Miler on Oct. 24.
Sixty students sprinted to the finish in the 100-yard dash, while 83 students enjoyed the one-mile Fun Run.
Taking top honors in the Fun Run were Percy Fields and Maya Saunders.
Tim Heath and Laura Dugger captured the top spots as male and female winners in the 3-Mile Run/Walk, competing against 180 participants in a course that started at Mechanicsville Elementary, wound through surrounding neighborhoods, and wrapped up at the school. Heath had a time of 21:02, while Dugger came in at 23.49.
According to Alicia Todd, assistant principal at Mechanicsville Elementary, the support of the community was described as “tremendous.”
She said that with MES students, faculty and staff, combined with community members and more than 75 business sponsors and contributors, the Mechanicsville Miler was “a huge success.”
Principal Amy Woodward extended thanks to all the runners, volunteers and sponsors who made the Miler possible. She also said she hopes everyone will plan to participate again next year.
