Hanover County government and the school system will each receive an additional $1 million following action by the Virginia General Assembly.
On Monday, County Administrator Cecil R. “Rhu” Harris Jr. said his plans for the additional million the county gets will break down three ways:
- $600,000 will be placed in reserve to “manage through the recession.”
- $450,000 will be used to reduce revenue estimates.
- $160,000 will go toward $20,000 in expenditures for the Sheriff’s Office, reinstatement of a position previously funded by the Compensation Board in the Commonwealth Attorney’s office, and additional funding for Juvenile Court services budget. Harris said more youths are being moved to the detention facility.
In Hanover County Public Schools, the county administrator said the $1 million will ease the number of positions planned to be cut.
Harris said “not as many layoffs” will be necessary due to the boost in funding.
“The entire school community, as a result of the General Assembly’s adopted biennial budget, can appreciate greatly that no further reductions should be necessary for the next school year beyond the $18.6 million in cuts already approved by the School Board,” Dr. Stewart D. Roberson, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, said. “As attention turns to the planning for the 2011-2012 school budget, we keep our fingers crossed that the economic indicators will be pointing in the right direction to offer the kind of human and fiscal stability, which is important to our community, our state, our nation and our school system.”
