With a sprawling and beautifully decorated Christmas tree, as well as the comfort of a house dated circa 1752, Virginia Darnell hosted a coffee on Dec. 30 for the Pamunkey Woman’s Club.
Darnell opened her home, situated in a wooded setting on Brandy Branch Mill Road, to members and guests, offering finger foods such as ham and roast beef biscuits, cheeses, fresh fruit, crackers and cinnamon coffee cake.
Santa Claus figurines adorned a table in the large living room, as her guests found seats after making their way through her buffet set up in the dining room.
Darnell, with grace and charm, kept check on drinks and plates. Her delicate floral pattern of coffee cups and dishes were ideal for a gathering of Southern women.
She also briefly explained the history of her house, which was formerly a mill with a general store attached. Her husband Raymond also shared tidbits about their home of 43 years.
Conversations turned from Christmas and time spent with family to grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as politics and the community.
Those accepting Darnell’s invitation were Patsy Anderson, Peggy Arnold, Gabie Crutchfield, Teresa Fifer, Mary Page Gregory, Carolyn Griffis, Lou Harkson, Hazel Kinser, Joyce Largent, Debbie Mitchell, Carolyn Shortt, Janice Tate and Mary Doyle Winters.
Guest make their way through the buffet line in the dining room of her house at Brandy Branch Mill Road.
