A fifth-grader at Pearson’s Corner Elementary School has received the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC)-Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award.

Jared Taylor is the Virginia recipient of the honor, which was originally funded by the Nicholas Green Foundation and NAGC.

An article that appeared in the Fall 2008 Virginia Association for the Gifted newsletter described Jared as having “shown himself to be a leader in his school and is very concerned with community service.”

In his application, Jared, the son of Jim and Kelly Taylor of Mechanicsville, said he knows he has “courage, leadership and the responsibility to be a leader.”
He was elected Student Council Association historian and made a Web site, http://www.pces.piczo.com, for the school that has “pictures of our school events, announcements and slideshows.”

He pursued the office of historian so he could “help raise school spirit. ”

Since he became an SCA officer, they have raised $1,800 for Maymont Park’s Adopt-an-Animal campaign to feed the animals and $500 for Heavenly Hats, with those funds going to “people with cancer so they can have a hat to wear when they lose their hair during their treatment.”

Jared was recommended by Sandra Crowder, a gifted and talented resource teacher at Pearson’s Corner.

Congratulations to Jared Taylor for the award. He is certainly most deserving and it is inspiring to see one of the younger members of our community look at the world and want to help others.
