Expired license enforcement eased by glitch

On the heels of last week’s computer glitch at the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is not en-forcing expired driver’s licenses that have or will expire Aug. 25 through Sept. 30.

Ac-cording to Capt. Michael J. Trice, the broad computer crisis that struck several state agencies, including the DMV, has created a significant backlog of Virginia drivers who will be trying to renew their licenses at very busy DMV customer service centers.

“Due to this unanticipated administrative hindrance to obtain renewed licenses, the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office will not enforce expired driver’s licenses that expired Aug. 25, 2010, through Sept. 30, 2010,” Trice said.

“This should provide citizens ample time to comply with the law,” he added.

Full enforcement of the requirement for a valid driver’s licenses will resume on Oct. 1.
