Eddie Buchanan, who serves as division chief of operations for Hanover Fire/EMS (emergency medical services), has been elected president of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI).
Formed in 1961, the ISFSI consists of more than 1,000 fire and EMS instructors throughout the world.
The ISFSI provides professional development, political representation and networking for emergency service educators.
Buchanan is the organization’s 16th president.
Elected to the ISFSI Board of Directors in 2004, Buchanan is the only Virginian on the board.
He has also served the organization as its director-at-large.
Buchanan also serves on the Technical Committee for Fire Service Training for the National Fire Protection Association, which establishes professional standards for the fire service.
He began his career in the fire service in 1982 with the Henry Volunteer Fire Department.
A former chief of the Henry Volunteer Fire Department, he is a life member.
He also helped establish Hanover’s renowned training programs, serving as the first program coordinator for Hanover’s Fire Academy, unique because it is one of the few in the nation that is run as a volunteer program.
Buchanan is an adjunct instructor for the Virginia Department of Fire Programs and served as a hands-on training instructor for the Fire Department Instructor’s Conference.
He authored the Volunteer Training Officer’s Handbook from Fire Engineering Books and Videos and has written various articles on training issues for professional trade magazines.
Buchanan and his wife Tori live in Hanover and have two children, Jake and Baylee.
Eddie Buchanan’s election to such a prestigious office serves as a high honor to the people of Hanover County. In addition to being elected president of an international organization, he is the only Virginian to serve on the Board of Directors.
