With the 4th of July a few days away, the Hanover County Fire-EMS Department wants to be sure that residents are aware of the laws associated with fireworks and their proper use.

In Virginia, it is illegal to sell, to buy, use, ignite, or explode firecrackers, skyrockets, or similar things that contain any explosives or inflammable compound or substance that explode, rises into the air or travels laterally, or fires projectiles into the air.

The only fireworks legally allowed to be sold or used in Virginia are sparklers, fountains, Pharaoh’s serpents, caps for pistols and pinwheels (commonly known as whirligigs or spinning jennies).

Please observe these safety precautions when using fireworks of any kind:

• Always read and follow label directions.

• Have an adult supervise all fireworks activities.

• Buy from a reliable fireworks dealer.

• Ignite outdoors.

• Have water handy.

• Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks.

• Light one at a time.

• Never reignite malfunctioning fireworks.

• Never give fireworks to small children.

• Store in a cool, dry place.

• Dispose of properly.

• Never throw fireworks.

• Never carry fireworks in your pocket.

• Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.

“All fireworks are extremely dangerous, especially in the hands of children,” said M.J. Flournoy, Hanover County chief fire marshal. “Instead of handling these fireworks yourselves, it is much safer to visit the many fireworks displays available throughout Hanover County and the region. Let the professionals handle it and keep your family safe.”

If you have questions concerning fireworks, call the Fire Marshal’s Office at 537-6195 or 730-6195.
