A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 13, in Hanover County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court for he Mechanicsville teen accused in the Oct. 23 ax attack on another Mechanicsville teenager.

Omar K. Abdelaal, 16, is scheduled to appear at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Larry E. Gilman. He has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding. If convicted, he faces a sentence of 20 years to life. According to Hanover County Commonwealth’s Attorney R.E. “Trip” Chalkley III, “A judge has the ability to suspend a portion of that sentence.”

R. Craig Evans, a Mechanicsville attorney, represented Abdelaal in a detention hearing last Wednesday. A message was left at his office Monday morning seeking comment.

Whether Evans will continue to represent the teen was not confirmed as of Monday.

Chalkley is pursuing having the case moved to Hanover County Circuit Court, which means the teen will be tried as an adult.

“If probable cause is found,” Chalkley said on Monday, “then, due to the nature of the charge, the matter goes to the Circuit Court for trial.”

On Oct. 28, he had said that “The nature of the charge allows us to just have a preliminary hearing rather than a transfer hearing.”

Chalkley said the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office “has done a remarkable job” with the investigation.

Abdelaal has been accused of assaulting a 15-year-old male around 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at Tractor Supply Co. in the 7000 block of Mechanicsville Turnpike in Mechanicsville following an altercation.

The victim suffered a laceration to the left side of his face.

Chalkley said last week that the attack was captured on surveillance camera and he had the video in his possession.

Since both teens are students at Lee-Davis High School, the Sheriff’s Office increased patrols several days last week. Sheriff V. Stuart Cook said on Friday that every report his office received was being taken seriously, which prompted the presence of additional officers.

Capt. Michael J. Trice, speaking on behalf of the sheriff, said on the Monday after the incident that the decision to increase security was a precautionary measure.

Abdelaal remains lodged in the Middle Peninsula Juvenile Detention Commission Merrimac Center in Williamsburg.

Amen to that ldhs parent. This is a defining moment for our community. Will we rally to assist all involved become better in conflict resolution skills & life skills or will we as a community wait for a bigger more devastating event, then make national news and wonder what could we have done. It takes a village to raise a child. Please lets be that village.

This situation is clearly a tragedy for both young men, their families, their friends and the community.  It seems this single act is the culmination of many negative acts before it.  While clearly the physical attack is unacceptable behavior/response, one must consider many contributory variables.  Additionally, these young men do not and did not stand alone in this escalation.  Many persons participated in, encouraged, overheard and/or observed yet overlooked negative exchanges.  Did the community, friends, teachers, neighbors, parents fail these boys?  What could we/should we have done to have intervened thereby salvaging the lives of two young men who I venture to say would like to re-live that day as they remember it in hindsight.  Bullying is without a doubt unacceptable.  Retaliation is equally unacceptable.  However, verbal/mental bullying is impossible to prove; therefore, it is largely tolerated.  People do have a stress/frustration limit - we all do.  I am so incredibly saddened that both of these boys must cope with this for the remainder of their lives - neither do I believe fully understood the potential seriousness/ramifications of their actions.  I encourage the remaining Lee Davis school body to rise to the challenge, learn from this tragedy and treat others in a mature and respectful manner.

You must be kidding. Hang in there Omar. How bout hang in there victim that took over 100 stitches to his face. I wouldnt give one penny to his defense and to have the audacity to ask for that is unbelievable. Bullying or not and no matter who said what noone deserves to be struck in the face with an axe. I hope the judicial system works here and that the facts are presented and the proper verdict and sentence is handed down.
