Sara called the “Hunger Hotline” in a desperate attempt to find food for her family. Both she and her husband had jobs, but due to the failing economy and rising costs, they were faced with the challenge of providing for themselves and two children.

The government programs, they contacted, shunned those who were willing to work but still unable to pay for their basic necessities. Within minutes, Sara was directed to a Central Virginia Food Bank facility that was close to her home and the dilemma was solved.

According to the Ad Council, one in eight children must deal with hunger in our country. That statistic does not include the many seniors and low income families who also find themselves in this predicament. The media’s focus on obesity further obscures this silent epidemic.

However, one company has risen to the challenge of actually doing something about this abysmal situation: Sklar Technology Partners. They organized a food drive to benefit the Central Virginia Food Bank which reaches out to the “working poor.”

Their president, Randy Sklar, said, “At Sklar Technology Partners, we are always interested in finding solutions that will benefit our clients. Since this is also the view of the Central Virginia Food Bank, our partnership was an easy alliance. We are very excited about the opportunity to help our community.”

Employees at Sklar Technology Partners have been working on the food drive since April 1. They supplied boxes to client offices for people to donate food items and nutritional supplements. They also accepted cash donations, for only $25 provides 125 meals through CVFB’s Children’s Café Program.
As an added incentive, Sklar Technology Partners promised to match donations of up to 1,500 food cans or $3,000.

In addition, to show their appreciation for participating companies, Sklar Technology Partners is providing a cookout on Sept. 18 at their office in Mechanicsville. Participants will enjoy live music, a cookout and activities for the children such as a slide, moon bounce, obstacle course and more. For the company that contributes the largest donation, Sklar Technology Partners will provide a free lunch/ice cream party for their employees.

Gratitude resounds at the CVFB’s main offices.

Fay Lohr, CEO of FeedMore, the umbrella organization of the Central Virginia Food Bank said, “Now, more than ever, we’re grateful for the support of corporations like Sklar Technology Partners. In the current economy, the generous response of local corporations’ leaders and employees show that their focus extends beyond their business to building up the entire community.”
