With several transportation-related projects either having been recently completed or still under way, Del. Christopher K. Peace, R-97th District (Mechanicsville) has provided an update.
Repaving and repairs along Interstate 295 include:
—Hanover County—I-295 south between mile marker 40 and Pole Green Road/Meadowbridge Road (Exit 38).
—Henrico County—I-295 south between Woodman Road (Exit 45) and Route 1 (Exit 43).
In the fall, a section of I-295 south between Nuckols Road (Exit 51) and Route 33 (Exit 49) is expected to be under construction. Peace referred to it as a federal stimulus project.
The delegate also said that the Virginia Department of Transportation recognizes that there are several other sections of I-295 that will need to be repaved and will add other projects to the I-295 repaving schedule as project funding becomes available.
According to Peace, I-295 north between Route 33 (Exit 49) and just south of Nuckols Road (mile marker 52) in Henrico County was completed in November.
Other completed projects are:
—Henrico County : I-295 north from the Greenwood Road/Woodman Road interchange (Exit 45) to the Route 33 (Mountain Road/Staples Mill Road) interchange (Exit 49) in July 2008.
—Henrico County : I-295 north from the Chickahominy River to the Greenwood Road overpass (approx. 2 miles) in late 2007.
—Hanover County : I-295 north from Meadowbridge Road/Pole Green Road (Exit 38) to the Chickahominy River (mile marker 42) in late 2007.
Background information supplied by Peace shows that I-295 was completed in four stages between 1980 and 1995.
As traffic volume has increased, so has the deterioration rate.
Noted deterioration can be found in the northwest section between I-64 and I-95 due, in part, to a 15 to 20 percent increase in traffic in the last four years. About 9,000 vehicles travel that stretch of highway each day.
