Doctor convicted of writing prescriptions over Internet

A Virginia doctor pled guilty Monday in federal court to writing prescriptions over the Internet for people he had never met or examined, as well as tax
evasion.

Fireworks laws must be observed

With the 4th of July a few days away, the Hanover County Fire-EMS Department wants to be sure that residents are aware of the laws associated with fireworks and their proper use. 

In Virginia, it is illegal to sell, to buy, use, ignite, or explode firecrackers, skyrockets, or similar things that contain any explosives or inflammable compound or substance that explode, rises into the air or travels laterally, or fires projectiles into the air.

Presence of troopers increasing on interstates

Motorists will see an increase in Virginia State Police troopers along Interstates 295, 85, 77 and for the first time the Pocahontas 895 Toll Road.

On Sunday, June 21 and Monday, June 22, state police will saturate the entire length of the targeted highways during the two-day enforcement blitz.

The traffic safety initiative is intended to remind people of the need to slow down, buckle up, and drive safely and responsibly on Virginia’s interstates through high-visibility enforcement.

Witnesses, quick response lead to robbery suspects’ arrests

Two area men are lodged in the Pamunkey Regional Jail this morning following an incident that occurred Tuesday afternoon at a Mechanicsville bank.

Antonio V. Gary, 47, of the 300 block of Washington Court in Highland Springs, and Marvin M. Clark, 44, of the 3000 block of Emporia Street in Richmond, have been charged with robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. They are being held at the regional jail while awaiting arraignment.

Sheriff’s Office schedules checkpoints

The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a License Checkpoint and Sobriety Checkpoint in Hanover on Friday, May 22.

The exact time and locations are not being released.

Officers will stop all vehicles passing through each checkpoint.

Each driver will be advised of the purpose of the checkpoint and requested to present their drivers’ license.

Any driver suspected of operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be directed to a safe area off of the roadway for further observation and possible… Read more...

Hanover man enters plea to killing cousin

Jerome Mallory, 43, of Hanover, entered a plea of guilty to second degree murder for the killing of Charles Houchens, 69, of Louisa, in Louisa County Circuit Court.

According to Louisa Commonwealth’s Attorney Thomas A. Garrett, the two men were arguing on Aug. 2 when Mallory struck Houchens several times, forcing him to the ground.

As Houchens laid on the ground, Mallory kicked him at least three times in the head, causing the fatal blow.

Hanover teen to serve five years for assault on School Resource Officer

William Eugene Lewis, now 17 years of age, was sentenced on May 5 in Hanover Circuit Court to serve five years on charges stemming from an assault on a School Resource Officer that occurred on Sept. 12, 2008.

Lewis was charged with aggravated malicious wounding and disorderly conduct after assaulting the deputy assigned to Hanover High School as a School Resource Officer.

The case against Lewis, who was 16 years of age at the time of the assault, was transferred to adult court for prosecution.

Unsolved Ashland case part of FBI database

A female homicide victim, whose body was discovered a decade ago near an Ashland truck stop, is part of a federal database of about 500 victims.

While the case of Carol Taylor, 39, formally remains under investigation by Ashland police, the FBI says details of the case are part of a nationwide program that is attempting to consolidate cases that may be similar.

Man accused in killing at sea appears in court

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A Mechanicsville man made his first Orange County court appearance Monday, March 30, after he was extradited last week from Virginia to face charges that he swindled and murdered a retired Phoenix investor in February 2008 after luring him aboard a boat in Dana Point Harbor.

Gary Shawkey, 45, is charged with killing Robert Vendrick, 71, for money, a special circumstances murder that could yield him a life term in prison without the possibility of parole if he is convicted.

Mechanicsville man charged with killing Arizona investor

A 45-year-old Mechanicsville man is being held in an Orange County, Calif., jail today after being charged in the death of an elderly Arizona investor.

Gary A. Shawkey, whose address is listed as the 8000 block of Peaks Road, faces a murder charge in the February 2008 killing of Robert Vendrick, 71, of Phoenix.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office filed special circumstances murder for financial gain charges against Shawkey “for luring an elderly Phoenix investor onto a boat off Dana Point Harbor last February.”
