Eighty-four vehicles of 1,078 passing through a sobriety checkpoint were detained by Hanover County Sheriff’s Office deputies Wednesday night. All of the vehicles were checked. Officers were situated on Mechanicsville Turnpike (U.S. 360) at the Henrico County line from 10:47 p.m. to 2:45 a.m.. Two separate incidents involving small plastic bottles used to create bottle bomb devices were investigated last week by the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and the Hanover County Fire Marshal’s Office.
According to Sgt. Chris Whitley of the Sheriff’s Office, the devices were set off at Mechanicsville area high schools while each school hosted a football game Thursday night. He said the devices are intended to create a loud noise.

Swaying in a mild breeze, the 378 small flags served as a reminder of the lives lost to drunk driving last year in Virginia.
They were placed near a podium where Gov. Timothy M. Kaine was joined by state officials and law enforcement officers in kicking off Checkpoint Strikeforce at the Hanover Wayside Park Thursday afternoon.
The governor was direct in his opening statement: “I want to make it incredibly painful for people who drive drunk.”

A 15-year-old from Caroline County has been charged with malicious wounding following an Aug. 17 incident.
According to a Friday press release from the Ashland Police Department, the male was being held at a juvenile detention center.
The shooting took place just after midnight at a residence in the 300 block of New Street in Ashland.
When police officers arrived, several individuals were seen leaving the area. They found an adult male with gunshot wounds to the back and the leg. He was transported to VCU Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
A joint effort between the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and the Henrico Division of Police led to the immediate capture of a suspect in a local bank robbery. The suspect has been identified as Rufus L. Nuckols of the 15000 block of Scotchtown Road in the Montpelier area of Hanover County. He was charged with bank robbery, two counts of armed robbery, and two counts of use of a firearm.

The folks at Scot’s Landing, a new neighborhood off Georgetown Road, celebrated the founding of their new Neighborhood Watch program recently.
It was the 125th such program in Hanover, said Scott Spradlin of the Hanover Sheriff’s Office. Thirteen were started last year, and four have been established so far in 2008.
“I think it’s an absolute necessity,” said Heather Taylor, Neighborhood Watch Coordinator at their kickoff event June 12. “The neighborhood is filling up with young children.”
Two men broke into Green Top Sporting Goods store last night and stole 34 handguns, said the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office today.
Sheriff’s deputies responded within three minutes to a 12:30 a.m. alarm, said Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chris Whitley, but the suspects had escaped after smashing locked glass display cases at the front of the store and taking semi-automatic handguns in .357, .380, .4O, .44, .45 and .50 caliber.
“They appear to have targeted the more expensive handguns,” said Whitley.
In 2007, throughout Hanover County, over a hundred thousand gallons of alcohol were consumed.
No harm there, right? After all, the cocktail hour is a time-honored tradition, a way to loosen the tightly wound stress of the day. And hey, it’s legal.
The danger, and the crime, is when the person raising the glass is only 13 years old. And according to the organization Increased Community Awareness Requires Everyone, or I CARE, kids in Hanover County tend to be around 13 when they take their first sip of beer, wine or liquor.
An apparent suicide and two Monday morning house fires within a mile of each other appear to be related, Hanover County authorities believe.
Firefighters responded around 8:40 a.m. to a fire at 6384 Shea Tree Circle in Cherrydale West subdivision. About a half hour later, another fire was reported at 8027 Vaughan Drive in Dogwood Knoll subdivision, less than a mile away.
