Old Man Winter may have tried to put a chill on Sunday’s annual Mechanicsville Christmas Parade, but, based on the turnout, it didn’t work.
With temperatures in the low 40s as parade participants prepared to kick off at 3 p.m., spectators lined the streets, most bundled in quilts, blankets and afghans. Winter coats, hooded sweatshirts, ball caps, toboggans and gloves were the attire of the day.
When he accepted the band director’s position at Atlee High School in June, Paul Rozecki Jr. knew he would be at the helm of a strong and talented group. And he was right.
Six of his students were selected for the prestigious Macy’s Great American Marching Band, which participated in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thanksgiving Day in New York City.
All seven were modest when talking about their achievement last Wednesday in one of the school’s music rooms.
They did agree, however, that it was a wonderful experience – and four, as juniors, have plans to audition and return next year.

Charges of rape and breaking and entering were dismissed Tuesday by a Hanover County judge after the victim failed to identify the defendant as her attacker.
Michael L. Hinton, 28, had been charged in connection with the Oct. 11 attack on an 81-year-old woman.
Now that the charges are dismissed, he was to be released later Tuesday.
Ashland police arrested Hinton about 12 hours after someone broke into an apartment on Cottage Green Drive and raped the woman who lives there, according to police and arrest warrants. The apartment complex is east of U.S. 1 near a shopping center.
At Tuesday’s preliminary hearing, Hinton was sitting about 20 feet from the woman,… Read more...
