Dr. Stewart D. Roberson, superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools, will be honored with the National Excellence in Education Award tonight during the 2009 AdvancED Conference in Chicago.
Presented for the first time by AdvancED, the parent organization for the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the award is based on a selection process from among 40 member states to recognize outstanding leadership in promoting excellence in education.

A 45-year-old Mechanicsville man is being held in an Orange County, Calif., jail today after being charged in the death of an elderly Arizona investor.
Gary A. Shawkey, whose address is listed as the 8000 block of Peaks Road, faces a murder charge in the February 2008 killing of Robert Vendrick, 71, of Phoenix.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office filed special circumstances murder for financial gain charges against Shawkey “for luring an elderly Phoenix investor onto a boat off Dana Point Harbor last February.”

Traffic on Interstate 95 was slowed earlier today when a dump body style truck struck an overhead sign, sending debris down on a following vehicle.
According to Sgt. Tom Cunningham of the Virginia State Police, Chauncey Winn, 58, of Richmond was driving a 1985 Mack Econodyne dump body style truck “that contained dirt, wood, tires, basically refuse.”

Deputy Barry Bland of the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has received the 2009 Law Enforcement Explorer Post Advisor of the Year Award.
The award is sponsored by the National Sheriffs’ Association.
Under Bland’s direction, Explorer Post 606 has been a critical component of the Sheriff’s Office service to the community.
The Explorers have been involved in everything from filling roles at National Night Out, assisting with various ceremonies, participating in service projects and academy role-playing, and supporting enforcement personnel.

Ellen Degeneres, host of The Ellen Degeneres Show, called Tracie to inform her that she and her husband Shawn had won a nine-day $30,000 vacation to two Hawaiian islands. This was like a dream come true for the Mechanicsville couple who had not had a honeymoon.
The Oakcrums eloped, opting to use money for a wedding to purchase a house as they started their life together.

Six-year-old Reese has inspired neighbors in the Royal Glen subdivision in Mechanicsville to work to make her life easier since she was diagnosed with having a brain tumor.
A ramp recently was installed at Walter and Sherry Klauer’s home at Doral Place for their little girl.
On Monday, students at Washington-Henry Elementary School started collecting coins for Reese to help the Klauers with the expenses associated with her chemotherapy treatments and rehabilitation expenses. The fundraiser continues through Friday.
