Eying Warner’s Senate seat, Davis comes to central Virginia

Rep. Tom Davis, R-Fairfax, doesn’t shy away from the reasons behind a recent stop in Richmond. In fact, he’ll tell you well before you have the chance to ask.
“With Sen. (John) Warner unsure about what he’ll do next year, we’re getting around the state and talking with people just in case,” Davis said last week. “We’ll be going around and taking the temperature a bit to see where things are for next year’s senate race.”

Damian running again in Ashland

Four years ago, Kevin R. Damian ran against incumbent supervisor Timothy Ernst in Ashland. Now, as Ernst bids farewell to the political scene after three terms, Damian is aiming to pick up where he left off.
“There are some very big issues that are facing Hanover County and I think the people need to be involved,” Damian said.
In 2003, Ernst defeated Damian 835 to 638 or 56.6 percent to 43.2 percent. On Nov. 6, Damian will challenge G.E. “Ed” Via, III, a Republican, and fellow Independent Steven D. Wright.

Neighborhood Watch dedicated at Oakley Hills

About 20 residents turned out last week for the unveiling of the Neighborhood Watch sign in Oakley Hills subdivision off Cold Harbor Road.
The development, built in 2004, has more than 90 homes, said Richard Osterfeld, who is heading up the Neighborhood Watch.
Osterfeld, a lieutenant colonel in the Army stationed at Fort Lee,  said he has 14 block captains signed up, many who were on hand for the unveiling.
“We will help be the eyes and ears for the Sheriff’s Office,” said Osterfled.
Block captain Harrison Moncure said that the neighborhood watch helped residents get to know each other.

Via hopes to succeed Ernst in Ashland

It is Hanover’s only open seat in November’s election and planning commissioner turned candidate G. E. “Ed” Via, III hopes to pick up right where his would-be predecessor leaves off.
“I think that he’s done a great job and I hope to continue that effort,” Via said last week, speaking of current Supervisor Tim Ernst, who decided last year not to seek reelection in the fall.
The 58-year-old Via, who has served as Ernst’s appointee to the county’s Planning Commission for the past four years, will face two others in the race: Kevin R. Damian and Steven D. Wright. Both Damian and Wright are running as Independents while Via will… Read more...

Book festival a bigger draw second time around

Robert Moore and his wife Virginia came from Short Pump to check out the 2nd Annual Hanover Book Festival last Saturday.
The retired photographer plans to publish a novel next year, tentatively titled “Confederate Gold Found,” about the search for about $160,000 in gold coins an bullion that left Richmond in April 1865 with CSA President Jefferson Davis.
While he was there he braved the heat to check out the antique car display that was staged along with the book festival.
Organizer JoAnne Liggan said the festival had about 70 authors, about twice as many as the first time around.

Best Dressed Tomato Contest winners named

Hanover County Parks and Recreation sponsored a “Best Dressed Tomato” Contest for children ages 2-5, 6-8 and 9-12 at the 2007 Hanover Tomato Festival on Saturday, July 7. 
Hundreds of children decorated tomatoes at the Festival and displayed them to be judged.
Prizes were awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place winners. 
The prizes consisted of:
 
•1st Place –Two Kings Dominion Tickets,
•2nd Place – $20 Wal-Mart Gift Certificate,
•3rd Place – $10 Wal-Mart Gift Certificate.

Cure by Design fashion show features local model

Cure by Design a local event in which the fashion, design, retail, and healthcare communities join forces to benefit the American Cancer Society, will be holding its second annual survivor fashion show and auction on Aug. 18, 7 p.m. at Toad’s Place of Richmond, 140 Virginia Street.

Emceed by NBC 12’s Andrea McDaniel, Cure by Design will feature 40 Richmond area models who are survivors of cancer.

One special model to the readers of the Local will likely be Mechanicsville resident, Lauren Parker.

At age three, Lauren was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma.

Sixteen years later, Parker is a proud survivor.
