Alice Mary Andrews, 81, of Mechanicsville, died Saturday, March 3, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Andrews, and is survived by three sons and their wives, Frank and Joyce, Dan and Bonnie, Jim and Della Andrews; seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Andrews was a member of the Catholic Church of The Redeemer and a former volunteer with East Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad. Her family received friends Sunday and Monday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where a Christian Wake Service was held Monday and where funeral services were held Tuesday. Virginia Chappelle Arendall, 87, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Highland Springs, widow of John Madison Arendall, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 7, 2007. She is survived by two daughters, Beverly A. Lilly of Newport News, and Sherry A. McCarthy and husband, Ron of Mechanicsville; five grandchildren, Kent, Chris and Alan Lilly of Newport News, Sara and Matthew McCarthy of Richmond; four great-grandchildren, Roger, Andrew and Madison May Lilly of Newport News, and Maddison Noelle McCarthy of Mechanicsville; and three great-great-grandsons. Mrs. Arendall was a lifelong member of Highland Springs United Methodist Church, a member of the Women’s Auxiliary, Post No. 142 of the American Legion. She was a joy to be around and loved to make others laugh. The family received friends Thursday, March 8, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., Mechanicsville. Funeral services were held Friday at Highland Springs United Methodist Church, 22 N. Holly Ave., Highland Springs, Va. Interment Washington Memorial Park.
Ernest Kay “Buddy” Borkey, 79, of Richmond, son of the late Orlando W. and Arlette S. Borkey, departed this life Tuesday, March 6, 2007. Ernest is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Lou (Jones) Borkey; his daughter, Pamela Kay West and her husband, Donald Dwayne West of Richmond. He is also survived by three sisters, Louise B. Tucker of Mechanicsville, Grace B. Manson of Pensacola, Fla. and Jean B. Achaj of Mt. Wolf, Pa. He is further survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Clyde and David Borkey; and a sister, Margaret Arlene Harris. Mr. Borkey served in the Navy from December 1945 to October 1947. He retired from the Protection Dept., Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond in 1988 after 34 years of service. He was a member of Fairmount Memorial Baptist Church and Woodmen of the World Lodge #468. The family received visitors Thursday, March 8 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where services were held Friday, March 9. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Lois Belle Carter, age 81, claimed the Promise of the Resurrection on Wednesday, March 7, 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Edward and Olivia Bertha Carter. She retired from C&P Telephone Company after many years of service. Lois was a lifelong member of Highland Park United Methodist Church and a resident of the Hermitage Home located on Westwood Ave. She was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star. The family received friends Thursday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Graveside services were held Friday at Oakwood Cemetery.
Claire Francis Enright, 88, of Mechanicsville, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007. She was the widow of William J. Enright and is survived by a sister, Marianne Butler and her husband, Edward; a stepson, Dr. Michael J. Enright and his wife, Susan; three step-granddaughters, Kelly, Margeaux and Darby Enright; her sister-in-law, Barbara G. Francis; three nephews, Michael Francis, David and Charles Butler; and three nieces, Kathy Diacont, Carol Copple and Donna Wine. Claire was a member of Northminster Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher in the young people’s department, and later an adult women’s class for many years. Her family received friends Friday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where services were held Saturday. Interment Oakwood Cemetery. Her family suggests that contributions be made to the Northminster Baptist Church Endowment Fund.
Jasper W. Fletcher of Mechanicsville passed away Sunday, March 4, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Fletcher; two sons, Dennis and his wife, Carolyn, Kenneth and his wife, Donna; three grandchildren, Keith Fletcher of Miami, Candace Wilcox and husband, Rhett, of Louisiana, Brittani Fletcher of Harrisonburg; one step-granddaughter, Rachel Clark and husband, Jonathan; two sisters, Bertie West and husband, Eugene, Fay Burris and husband, Raymond; two brothers, Wilbur and wife, Vernell, Nelson and wife, Emily. Mr. Fletcher was a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church for over 50 years, and was a retired employee of Reynolds Metal Co. He served in Korea and received the Silver Star for Distinguished Service. The family received friends Tuesday and Wednesday, March 6 and 7 at the Mechanicsville Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Funeral services were held Thursday at Cool Spring Baptist Church, 9283 Atlee Station Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. Interment followed at Signal Hill Memorial Park. Violet Barrett Gibbs, 92, of Mechanicsville, widow of Thomas E. Gibbs, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2007. She is survived by a daughter, Wilma G. Culley; son, T. Christopher “Chris” Gibbs and wife, Annette; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gibb was former Head Dispatcher for East Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad and Henrico Volunteer Rescue Squad. The family received friends Thursday, March 8 at the Mechanicsville Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Graveside services were held Friday, March 9, 2007 at Forest Lawn Cemetery. William Donald “Don” Gurley, 89, passed away on March 3, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anne Towsey Gurley; two loving daughters, Daryl Carter and her husband, Coy of Concord, N.C. and Donna G. Lemon of Mechanicsville; one devoted son, Thomas B. Gurley and his wife, Emily of Mechanicsville; four grandchildren, Dawn Thomas and her husband, Scott, Chris, Jonathan, and Joey Gurley; and two great-grandchildren, Jamie and DJ Whitaker. Don was born in Fremont, N.C. to Thomas Daniel and Adair Hardee Gurley on June 10, 197. He was a member of the Army from 1944 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater. He was an advisor on the Burma Road for two years, assigned by the government to get lend-lease supplies into China. He served in the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department and was a lifetime member of East Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad. He was a member of the VFW Post 9808 and the Washington and Henry Masonic Lodge. He was retired from Virginia Transportation and continued to stay active in his rescue squad work until the age of 79. He was a avid hunter and fisherman and instilled this love of the outdoors in his children and grandchildren. He was a loving father and a special granddaddy. The family received friends Monday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where services were conducted Tuesday. Interment private. Robert T. Harris Sr., 83, of Mechanicsville, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007 from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Margaret M. Harris. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Claude, Billy and Henry. Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, Robert Harris Jr. and his wife, Judy; and a daughter, Bonnie Fleenor and her husband, Jim. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He retired after 30 years of service as a detective sergeant with the Henrico Co. Police Dept. He was also a WWII veteran and a member of Fairmount Methodist Church. The family received friends Thursday at Bliley Funeral Home’s Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, and where funeral services were held Friday. Interment Washington Memorial Park. Virginia Pruitt Mitchell, 88, of Richmond, formerly of Goochland, died on Sunday, March 4, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth C. Mitchell; and a sister. She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Virginia M. and Douglas A. Hudgins; a son and his wife, William D. Jr. and Carolyn W. Mayo; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two sisters, and three brothers. Her family received friends Tuesday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Graveside services were conducted Wednesday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bon Secours Hospice.
Gordon Granville Mundie Jr., 59, of Richmond passed away Saturday, March 3, 2007. He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon Granville Mundie Sr.; and his sister, Ann Beahr. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Mundie; son, Gordon Granville Mundie III and wife, Bonni; mother, Elizabeth Mundie; three stepsons, Billy and David McGhee and Allen Combs and wife, Marcia; two stepdaughters, Dianna Trivette and Melissa Wilson; eight grandchildren, Coleman Mundie, Andy and Matt Combs and Kristen, Damien and Joshua Wilson, Travis Bateman, Terri Golding; two sisters, Jean Dix and husband, Ted and Susan Talley and husband, David, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Mundie was a member of Bonnie Brae Church of Christ where he served on the buildings and grounds committee. Lloyd E. Murphy Jr., a beloved husband, father, son and brother, passed away unexpectedly on March 2, 2007 in Mechanicsville, Virginia. A native of Illinois, Mr. Murphy relocated to Richmond, Virginia with his wife, Gwen Walden of Clinton, Illinois in 1970. Lloyd and his wife have two daughters, Brandi Leah Murphy and Kacey O’Kelly Murphy, and have made their home in Virginia for the past thirty years. Lloyd was born August 31, 1943 to Lloyd Murphy Sr. and Dorothy Cooper in Decatur, Illinois. Mr. Murphy attended school in Maroa, Illinois, where he was active in sports. Following his tour of duty with the Marine Corps in Vietnam, Mr. Murphy worked for Mueller Company in Decatur. Upon moving to Virginia, Mr. Murphy was in the commercial water works business and was Vice President of Water Works, Inc., where he had worked for over 25 years. Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife and two daughters; mother, Dorothy Baldwin; and sister, Linda (Rod) French, both of Decatur, Illinois. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Cory Chamberlain and Christi Chamberlain of Illinois, Tim and Kerri Murphy and Don (Carissa) May of Michigan, Stephen Ammann, Dave (Stephanie) Rech and Matt (Debbie) Groenig of Washington, Dave (Stacey) Swanson and Jon (Christi) Liljigren of Idaho. Lloyd was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Murphy Sr.; and his brother, Larry Murphy. Funeral services were held in Mechanicsville, Va. March 7 at Bennett Funeral Home, with visitation on March 6. Mr. Murphy was taken to Illinois for burial. Visitation was held in Decatur, Illinois March 8 at Dawson & Wikoff from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Graveside services were held in Maroa, Illinois at 11 a.m. Friday, March 9. Lloyd was an extraordinary man, devoted to God, family, and country. Loved and respected by all who knew him, he spent countless hours serving others in various ways. Lloyd enjoyed many activities, such as gardening, biking and running, but his greatest satisfaction was working to provide a Christian education for children. At the time of his death, he was involved in opening the New Hanover Christian Middle School at New Hanover Presbyterian Church. The Lloyd E. Murphy Leadership Scholarship Fund has been established to promote the development of future Christian leaders. Corey Austin Winters, age 9, was taken by the angels to be with Jesus on Tuesday, February 20, 2007, after a courageous battle with childhood leukemia. He was surrounded by his loving family at his home in Prince George County. Born in Suffolk, VA. Corey spent most of his life in Surry and was a student at Surry Elementary School. He loved riding his four wheeler, hunting, and playing Little League baseball. Corey is survived by his mother, Crystal Michelle Hartless and her companion, Shawn C. Crabtree; his father, Edward “Rusty” Winters; a brother, Jayden Blake Crabtree; two sisters Haley and Ashley Crabtree; maternal grandparents, Joan and Bryan Hartless; paternal grandparents, Lynn Warren and James Winters; uncles, Shawn Hartless, I and fiance Ramona Wheeler, Brandon Winters, Jerrett Winters, Ashton Mattox; cousins, Shawn Hartless, II, Amber Hartless, Shane Hartless, Reva Wheeler, Jamie Winters, Joshua Winters, Justin Winters; great-uncles, Roy Hartless, Harvey Holt, II, Chris Meredith; great-aunts, Deborah Meredith, Dixie Hartless, Debbie Locks; and Best Friend, Anthony “Boo Boo” Harris. He was predeceased by great-grandparents, Laura Taylor Hott and James Cary Hott, Sr., Roy S. Hartless, Sr., Dorthy Holt, Harvey Holt, I, and Ann O’Donnell. Funeral services were held Friday, February 23, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the Purviance Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Homes, Wakefield, with the Rev. Connie Gibbs officiating. Interment followed in the Waverly Cemetery, Waverly, VA.
