George Albert “Pete” Covington, age 71, of Mechanicsville, died Sunday, April 29, 2007. He served in the U.S. Navy as an aviation mechanic, retired from Philip Morris U.S.A., was a former Henrico County firefighter, a member of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, and was known to Hanover bus drivers as “Papa Smurf.” He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jayne Redden Covington; two daughters, Kristie C. Lane and husband, Greg, and Lynn C. Goodloe and husband, Graham; three grandchildren, Sean Luke Beard, Rachael E. Goodloe and Courtney L. Goodloe; and loving dogs, Nugget and McKayla. The family received friends Tuesday and Wednesday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church. Interment Hanover Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the building fund of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church.

Dorothy Hughes Hall, of Old Church, Va., died peacefully April 30, 2007. She was born in Perry, Ohio, the daughter of the late Matthew Crockett Hughes and Lillian McNeal Hughes. She grew up in Bluefield, Va. and received her teaching certificate from Radford College. She taught school in Burkes Garden, Va. and Hanover County, Va. She was an organist at Immanuel Episcopal Church. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of 55 years, Cary Wade Hall; two daughters, Janet Hall Gallagher and husband, Carroll, and Deborah Hall Wake and husband, Jim; five grandchildren, Katherine Gallagher Gay, Cary Scott Gallagher, Eric Wade Beer, James Lee Wake Jr. an Molly Manning Wake; one brother-in-law, Edmund Walker Hall; and three nieces and two nephews. The family received friends Thursday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Funeral services were conducted Friday at Immanuel Episcopal Church, 3263 Old Church Rd., Mechanicsville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 788, Mechanicsville, Va. 23111.

Claude H. Rigsby, 82, of Richmond, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2007. Preceded in death by his wife, Lois G. Rigsby, he is survived by four children, Deborah Giles and her husband, Michael, Steven Rigsby and his wife, Barbara, Kenneth Rigsby and his wife, Renee and Diane Anderson and her husband, Mark; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters. He was a WWII Army veteran and was a retired mechanic with Hyman Brothers Pontiac with 50 years of service. The family received friends Tuesday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. A graveside service was held Wednesday, May 2, 2007 in Signal Hill Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mattie B. Whitlock, 92, of Mechanicsville, passed away Friday, April 27, 2007, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Floyd Whitlock; sons, Lindsay R., William B. and David K. Whitlock; grandson, Benjamin (Marck) Holzbach; and son-in-law, Benjamin B. Holzbach Sr. Mrs. Whitlock was born in Caroline Co. on January 7, 1915 to her parents, James Brooking and Dolly Loving and has resided in Hanover Co. since age two. She is survived by three daughters, Dorothy W. Holzbach, Verna W. Crowder (LeRoy) and Betty W. Poore, all of Mechanicsville; son, Russell F. Whitlock Jr. (Judy) of Ruther Glen; daughter-in-law, Judy F. Whitlock of Mechanicsville; a devoted friend, Dorothy S. Whitlock; nine grandchildren, one devoted granddaughter and caregiver, Darlene K. Davis, 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. The family received friends Saturday, April 28 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Funeral services were held Sunday at Hanover Evangelical Friends Church, 6420 Mechanicsville Turnpike. Interment followed at Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hanover Evangelical Friends Church or to Bon Secours Hospice, 8580 Magellan Pkwy., Richmond, Va. 23227.
