Phyllis Marie Anderson, 74, of Hanover County, departed this life Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010. Remains rest at March Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where viewing was held on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 in March Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Gary C. Miller officiated and Rev. Charles W. Cannon was the eulogist. Graveside services were held in Oakwood Cemetery.
Louise Slaughter Dooley, of Bradenton, Fla., who returned home to Richmond to fulfill her wish to see family and friends, passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her parents, Aubrey and Ethel Tuck; brother, Clinton; her first husband of 40 years, Gilbert “Johnny” Slaughter; and her second husband of 26 years, T. Herman Dooley. She is survived by her son, John Slaughter and wife, Karina; daughter, Betty Tatum and late husband, Roy; grandchildren, Wendy and husband, Vince Valdrighi, Troy and wife, Brandy Tatum; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Tatum Valdrighi and Austin Tatum; stepdaughter, Karly Coleman and husband, Rob; stepgrandchildren, Kerry and husband, Eric Dering and Nicole Smith; stepgrandson, William and wife, Kathy Simon; stepgreat-grandchildren, William Jr. and Olivia Simon. Special thanks to a dear family friend and loving caregiver, Mary McDonough. Louise was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a beautiful person with a heart full of love. She enjoyed life and leaves behind many wonderful friends and family that will forever cherish a lifetime of memories and will miss her greatly. The family received visitors at Bennett’s Funeral Home on Lee-Davis Road Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 and where funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010. Judith Anne Jones, of Mechanicsville, departed this life at age 66, in the early morning of Jan. 4, 2010. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Roy Donald Jones; and her twin children, Dawn Michelle Jones and David Michael Jones, both of Richmond. Judy was born in Baltimore, the only child of Mr. Otto and Mrs. Jessie Dare Reynolds. After graduating from Williamston High School, she moved to Richmond to work in advertising at Richmond Newspapers, where she met the man who would be her devoted and loving husband for 44 years; they married at First Baptist Church in May 1965. They enjoyed many happy travels together in their early marriage, visiting Hawaii, Mexico and even far-off Tahiti. Judy was later employed at Hunton and Williams, but when she became a mother she devoted her life to raising her beloved children. Her funeral service was held Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 at Bliley’s - Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family received friends one hour prior to the service. John W. Jordan, “Jack”, 75, of Glen Allen, son of the late Marvin Stanley and Alma Elizabeth Reams Jordan, went to be with the Lord Jan. 5, 2010. He is survived by his daughter, Michelle Natale and her husband, Jeff; son, Scott Jordan; his longtime best friend, Ruby Jordan; three grandchildren, Jordan, Danielle and Brooke Natale; brother, William Jordan and his wife, Florence; and many nieces and nephews. Jack will be missed by all of those whose lives he touched. He was a U.S. Army veteran. The family received friends Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., where services were held Friday, Jan. 8, 2010. Graveside services were held at Westhampton Memorial Park. Richard L. Kocsis, “Richie”, 76, of Mechanicsville, died Dec. 31, 2009. He served in the first Marine division of the U.S. Marine Corps and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his sister, Helen Wrzesniewski; and other family and friends. Services were private.
Eugene Lamm, “Joe”, 69, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 5, 2010. He worked for AAA for over 20 years and was preceded in death by a son, Nathan Scott Lamm. Surviving are his son, Lewis Eugene Lamm and his wife, Cindy; three grandchildren, Joshua, Lydia and Aislinn Lamm; great-grandchild, Nathan Lamm; and fiancee, Josephine Bowles. Elizabeth Loving Melton, 66, of Mechanicsville, went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 5, 2010. She was the widow of Harry Ray Melton Sr. and was preceded in death by her parents, George C. Loving and Mary Gertrude Loving; and a sister, Jean Loving Martin. She is survived by a daughter, Stacy Lynn Melton; son, Harry Ray Melton Jr.; brother, Joseph Allen Greenwood; and several nieces and nephews. The family received friends Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road. Emil Lawrence Mosheim, retired U.S. Army Colonel, 95, of Glen Allen, died on Jan. 7, 2010. Colonel Mosheim obtained a Bachelor of Science in Commerce from St. Louis University. Colonel Mosheim was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps in 1940. He served at various duty stations in the continental U.S. to include Defense General Supply Center, Richmond Va., and the U.S. Army Quartermaster Center, Fort Lee, Va. Colonel Mosheim also served in Alaska and the Philippines. He was the Army liaison officer to the French government in Paris, and served two tours in Cambodia as the Commander of the Saigon Logistics Arena in South Vietnam. During his tenure in the Army, Colonel Mosheim was a true warrior and leader, who was respected and loved by all the soldiers and civilians that he served. Colonel Mosheim received many awards to include the WWII Victory Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Commendation Medal, and Legion of Merit. He ended his distinguished 30-year military career at Fort Lee in 1969. Never one to stay idle, Emil traded his uniform for a business suit and began a new career with the City of Richmond, first with the Health Department and then as the city’s Director of Community Facilities, after serving the city for 10 years, Emil retired for the second time. During those early years of retirement, Emil entered art classes at Virginia Commonwealth University, joined both the Richmond and Virginia Ski Clubs and became an avid snow skier. Emil also became the leader of a very special group of friends who dubbed themselves the “Fast Track.” Emil and his wife, Pat, traveled the world. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered by all those he touched. Emil was born in Sequin, Texas on March 23, 1914; he was the son of the late William and Emma Mosheim. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor Louise Taylor; sister, Ethel Klasek; and brother, Dr. William Mosheim. Emil is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia Midkiff Mosheim; children, Joyce Frank (Cliff) of Goochland, Brenda Norman Leavitt (Bill) of St. Augustine, Fla., George Shanko III of Raleigh, N.C.; his two special “Sunshines” granddaughter, Hillary A. Norman; and great-granddaughter, Lyllian Alivia Huber of Staunton, Va.; sister, Helen Delaney of Houston, Texas; many nieces and nephews, and many dedicated friends. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010 at Bliley’s - Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., and where a celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010. Colonel Mosheim will be buried, with full military honors, from Ft. Meyers Chapel, Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Army Emergency Relief Fund, 200 Stovall Street, Room 5-N-13, Alexandria, Va. 22332-0600, or your local chapter of the Boy Scouts of America.
Phyllis Hughes Powell, was reunited with her husband Bob in Heaven on Wednesday Jan. 6, 2009. She is survived by her sons Jef, Ken and Mark and their wives, Suzan, Marianne and Jan; grandchildren, RJ, Eric, Luke, Jacob, Lori, Jaclyn and Colton, and great-grandson, Brandon. Phyl was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and served Jesus through her entire life. The family invites friends to a memorial service on Jan. 16, 2009, 3 p.m., at Fairmount Christian Church, 6502 Creighton Road. A reception to follow at the church. Cathleen May Matthews Shobe, “Kitty”, 80, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010. She was born in Orange County, Va. on Aug. 28, 1929 to the late Drewey Chiles Matthews and Freda Dawson Matthews, and at a young age moved to Richmond. Cathleen graduated from John Marshall High School. She worked in mortgage finance and retired from Bank of America. Cathleen was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Ann Marie Shobe; four brothers, Shelby, Lucien, Olander, and Andrew Matthews; three sisters, Lucille Bland, Dorsey Lenz, and Colleen Olah. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Julian McBee Shobe; son, Danny Shobe of Golden, Col.; daughter, Sue Zimmerman and husband, Keith, of Goochland; son, Patrick Shobe and wife, Linda, of Aylett; brother, Robert Matthews and wife, Eloise; five grandchildren, Matthew Shobe, Jessica Zimmerman, Keith Zimmerman Jr., Tiffany Shobe, and Ryan Shobe; great-grandchild, Alonna Z. Fleming; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her “river family” at South Hill Banks. Cathleen was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. The family received friends Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Nelsen Funeral Home and Crematory, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. Richmond, where funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010. Virginia Dart Wallmeyer, 93, of Hanover, passed away peacefully on Jan. 4, 2010 at her home, surrounded by her family, while praying the Rosary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ignatius H. Wallmeyer. She is survived by seven children, Joseph B. Wallmeyer, Mary Curtin-Savard, Ann W. Wallmeyer, Ignatius R. Wallmeyer Sr., Richard D. Wallmeyer, Kathleen W. Dart and John Mark Wallmeyer; 27 grandchildren and 30-plus great-grandchildren. Mrs. Wallmeyer graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School and from Trinity College in 1937. She went on to obtain her master’s degree in mathematics from Catholic University. After WWII, she became a dedicated mother, wife and homemaker, raising her seven children at her Hanover County home. She was an active member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Ashland and a current member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. The family received friends at Bliley’s-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 and Friday, Jan. 8, 2010. The Rosary will be prayed each evening before visitation concludes. A Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 5217 Futura Ave., Richmond. Graveside services were held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Nancy Thrift Wiley, 85, of Mechanicsville, passed away Jan. 7, 2010. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Trudy Thrift Carlton and her companion, Carl Pullin Jr.; two grandsons, Michael and Steve Carlton and his fiancee, Naomi Wall; one granddaughter, Michele Sharpe and her husband, Harry; great-grandchildren, Chris and Ashley Sharpe, Robbie Carlton, Daniel and Brittany Bruce, and Trinity Wall; and a host of nieces and nephews. She retired from Baker Equipment Engineering Company after over 40 years of service. The family received friends at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010 and where funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 11, 2010.
