Dairl Edward Arrowood Sr., 68, of Aylett, lost his battle with congestive heart failure on Jan. 22, 2010. He was a member of Atlee Community Church and worked for Colonial Stores for more than 25 years. He loved camping, bird watching, and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Lucille Arrowood. He is survived by two daughters, Terry Lynne Ramsey and husband, Walter “Bucky,” and Rhonda Marrett and husband, Greg; one son, Dairl Arrowood Jr. and wife, Wendy; four grandchildren, Tiffany Linick and husband, Brian, Amanda and Dylan Arrowood, and Drake Marrett; six brothers and sisters; and many other loving family members. The family received friends Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010. Graveside services followed at Signal Hill Memorial Park.

George S. Baroody, of Glen Allen, formerly of Mechanicsville, passed away Jan. 17, 2010 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Elda L. Baroody; two daughters, Judy Austin-Shupe (Mike) and Nancy McIntyre (Danny); two sons, Thomas Carlton (Carol) and Gary Carlton; and two grandsons, Jesse Austin and Jason Carlton. He was a retired builder and owner of Top Plumbing and Heating Corp. George was an avid sportsman who enjoyed his times hunting and fishing. A service was held Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010 in the mausoleum chapel at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4240 Park Place, Glen Allen, Va. 23060. Arrangements by Bliley’s-Staples Mill.

Jane Thurston Chiles, 75, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 19, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Chiles, and was a member of Fairmount Christian Church. Surviving are her son, Preston Chiles and his wife, Bonnie; two grandsons, Jason and Larry; great-granddaughter, Kourtney; sister, Vivian Tucker and husband, Hunter; and two nephews, Winfred Tucker and Terry Tucker. The family received friends Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road. Graveside services were held Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

William E. Clingman Sr., “Bill”, 85, of Mechanicsville died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Margaret, and he is survived by two children, Diane C. Greenwood and her husband, Ollie, and W. Edward Clingman, Jr. and his wife, Gwendy; three grandchildren, Stephanie Greenwood, Ryan and Lauren Clingman. Mr. Clingman was a longtime member of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, and the Thomas Davis Masonic Lodge. The family received friends Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 9271 Shady Grove Road and where services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010. Terry Garland Ferguson Sr., “Tuck”, of Emporia went to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Jewell Ferguson.  He is survived by his sons, Terry G. Ferguson Jr. and Brandon Ferguson and wife Heather; their mother Brenda Ferguson; Father, Stanton Ferguson Sr.; sister, Pier Ferguson; brothers, Stanton Ferguson Jr. and wife Geraldine, Robert Ferguson and wife Bette, Reginald Ferguson and wife, Kari; nephew and fishing buddy, Alex Ferguson; and many other loved ones and friends.  Terry successfully fought lymphoma for 32 years with courage and perseverance. He inspired all those who knew him to make the most of the time we have been given and to cherish life, family, and friends. Terry graduated from Virginia Tech and received a lifetime achievement award for his contributions at the Virginia Employment Commission where he was employed for over 36 years. Terry was a devoted father and friend who always demonstrated how to overcome adversity with a smile.  He will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched with his kind heart, patience, and never-give-up attitude.  A memorial service was held at Liberty Christian Church in Mechanicsville on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the VCU Massey Cancer Center in Richmond, Va.

Oriana Robertson Hargrove, of Hanover County, died on Jan. 18, 2010. She is survived by her beloved husband of fifty seven years, Frank D. Hargrove, Sr. Mrs. Hargrove was born on Dec. 29, 1928, in Richmond and attended Longwood College and Arkansas College.  She was friendly to all and known for her humorous outlook on life.  Interested in assisting those with mental challenges, she co-founded the Friends of Hanover, Inc., a charitable corporation that hosted the Hanover Gala to support the Sunrise House of the Hanover County Mental Health Association.  She served on the Board of Directors of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, the Board of Associates for Randolph-Macon College, the Advisory Board of Memorial Regional Hospital, the Board of Directors of the Hanover County Mental Health Association, the Board of Directors of Hanover Tavern, and was a member of the Hanover County Republican Women’s Club.  A member of The Ashland Garden Club, she was interested in gardening and historic preservation and restoration of eighteenth century structures, including her own happy home Cool Water.  She was a member of Fork Episcopal Church.  Recently she shared her personal experience to promote awareness and understanding of those suffering from Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.  She is also survived by her children, Dale Alderman and her husband John “Rick” Alderman, Frank Hargrove, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Hargrove, Stewart Hargrove and his wife Lynn Hargrove, and Wellesley Hargrove and his wife Kimberly Hargrove, and ten grandchildren, Oriana Hargrove, Stewart Hargrove, Sarah Hargrove, Mark Hargrove, Frank Hargrove, III, Mollie Sarrah Hargrove, Madeleine Alderman, Graeme Alderman, Hannah Jane Hargrove and Bailey Hargrove.  The family received friends Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010 at the Reid Chapel of the Nelsen Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Highway, Ashland.  Funeral services were held at Fork Episcopal Church, 12566 Old Ridge Road, Doswell on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010. Alvah Wilton Houchins, “Bill”, 86, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in the Pacific Theatre, and retired after 41 years of service with C&P Telephone Co. Mr. Houchins was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and a Master Mason affiliated with Babcock Lodge #322 AF&AM. He was a charter member of Henrico Volunteer Rescue Squad and Henrico Volunteer Fire Deparment, and was a life member of VFW Post 9808. Preceding him death were his wife of 51 years, Helen L. Houchins, and a brother, Thomas E. Houchins. Surviving are his wife, Louise “Sonny” Houchins; daughter, Marti Collier and her husband, Tom; son, Rick Houchins and his wife, Martha; grandchildren, Lori Waran and her husband, Jeff, Chris Collier and his fiancé, Becky Poindexter, Kaci Collier, Andy Houchins and his wife, Megan, and Katy Underdown and her husband, Brett; and six great-grandchildren; and beloved nephew, Fred Hughes. The family received friends Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where a memorial service was held Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010. Joyce Edwards Keeberly, (Hott), of Mechanicsville, peacefully succumbed with family by her side on Jan. 24, 2010. She is survived by daughter, Gail Crowder (Will), and sons, Kenny Hott (Carol), Butch Hott (Janine), and Mike Hott (Sylvia), and was loved by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nephews. The family received friends at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd, Mechanicsville, on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010. Harry L. Mears, “Sonny” D.D.S. (Ret.), of Covenant Woods, Mechanicsville, passed away Jan. 18, 2010. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Barbara J. Mears; a daughter, Martha McCullough and husband, Skip; a son, Lynn Mears and wife, Patti; a sister, Jean Gambill; and three grandchildren, Christopher B. Mears, Laura A. Landerman and Drew J. Landerman. A celebration of life was held Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010 at the Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville. Committal services private. Dorothy Garnett Putze, 77, of Henrico, was called home to the Lord on Jan. 22, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Putze Jr.; her mother, Ida Rodgers Garnett; her father, Nicholas Carrington Garnett; two sisters, Charlotte Hanna Garnett and Virginia Dare Garnett; four brothers, Harry Hall Garnett, George Wilson Garnett, James Carrington Garnett, Nicholas Carrington Garnett Jr. She is survived by her son, Joseph W. Yarbrough and his wife, Peggy J. Yarbrough, of Hanover, Va.; four sisters, Emma S. Sawyer of Front Royal, Elizabeth G. Whipple of Hanover, Shirley G. Carter and her husband, Tom Carter, of Ashland, Jane G. Seward and her husband, Joe, of Hanover. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Tracy Renee Yarbrough of Hanover and Jennifer Y. Kastelberg and her husband, Ben Kastelberg, of Henrico; and one great-granddaughter, Kaitlin Renee Odom. She is also survived by a longtime close friend, Harry Miller of Henrico, who provided loving devotion and care during her time of illness. Homazelle L. Royer, 83, of Mechanicsville, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman R. Royer, and is survived by one son, Tom R. “Tommy” Royer and wife, Dianna; one daughter, Janice Smither and husband, Danny; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Jessie Reynolds and husband, Harold; as well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Royer was a member of Fairmount Christian Church. The family received friends at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., Monday, Jan. 25, 2010. Lutie Sheridan, “Nana”, age 89, of Mechanicsville,  went to sleep Dec. 18, 2009. Survived by two daughters, Nancy N. Near of Burgess, Va. and Mary N. Creekmore of Mechanicsville; four grandchildren, Mary Beth Kenny of King William, Va., Kelly L. Near of Burgess, Va., Trey Creekmore and Heather Garrett, both of Mechanicsville; also four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alease Phillips of Triplett, Va. and Rosa Mae Powell of Thomasville, N.C. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home. A celebration of her life will be held 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010 at the Atlee Chapel- Woody Funeral Home.

Eunice Anderson Smith, 84, of Mechanicsville, our loving mother, went home to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Jan. 19, 2010. She was the widow of Robert A. “Smitty” Smith Sr. and was an active member of Gethsemane Church of Christ. Surviving are her daughter, Fay Coffey and husband, Jerry; sons, Robert “Sonny” Smith Jr. and wife, Cindy, of Waynesboro and James A. Smith and wife, Roberta, of Mechanicsville; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. The family received friends Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010 at Gethsemane Church of Christ. Graveside services followed at Augusta Memorial Park in Waynesboro. Lorene Brooks Stanley, 83, of Studley, died Jan. 18, 2010. She is survived by her son, Dale Stanley; and several nieces and nephews. The family received friends Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010 at Salem Presbyterian Church. Graveside services were held in the church cemetery. Nancy Jean Ways, passed away peacefully at her home in Mechanicsville on Jan. 20, 2010. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary sorority for women educators, and a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. She taught third grade at Rural Point Elementary School for 25 years. She received her Bachelor of Science degree at Radford College and Master of Arts from West Virginia University. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, George R. Ways; son, Christopher B. Ways and wife, Tiffany; granddaughters, Shelly Katherine, Jenna Nichole and Erin Christina; son, Richard Shawn Ways and wife, Leigh Ann; grandson, Hayden Richard. Nancy touched many lives and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Her bubbly personality could brighten anyone’s day. She was a devoted grandmother, wife, mother, and teacher. The family received friends on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010 and Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 at Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. A celebration of her life began with a service at Shady Grove United Methodist Church on Jan. 23, 2010 at 8209 Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville, and graveside services followed at Signal Hill Cemetery.
