Mary Harris Bivens, age 79, of Glen Allen, passed away Jan. 26, 2008. Preceded in death by her husband Henderson Lee Bivens Sr., he brother and sister-in-law; Meredith and Margaret Harris. She is survived by children; Henderson Lee Bivens Jr. (Carolyn) of Ashland, Elizabeth B. Mauney (Tommy) of Ashland, Della B. Herring (Tommy Ray) of Mechanicsville, Franklin Wayne Bivens (Kathy) of Mechanicsville, 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 2 sisters; Evelyn H. Garnett, Martha H. Stephens, brother; Rev. Roy J. Harris (Doris) and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. The family received friends on Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, Rt. 301 and Shady Grove Road. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008,, at the funeral home. Graveside services were held at Signal Hill Memorial Park.
James Hardy Boswell Jr., 67, of Mechanicsville, died Jan. 12, 2008. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Joan M. Boswell; and his three children, Earl Boswell (Laurie), William Boswell (Cathy), and Jennie-Beth Barrett (Sean); also eight grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Newcomb and Maxine Rowe, both of Amelia. Mr. Boswell was employed by the Department of Military Affairs, and was retired from the Virginia Army National Guard. The family received friends Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008 at the Woody Funeral Home - Atlee Chapel, 9271 Shady Grove Rd. A graveside service was held Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008 at Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Diabetes Association.
Everett Milton Dickerson, 80, of Mechanicsville, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Phyllis Dickerson; his parents, Robert and Hattie Dickerson; brothers, Eugene, Elliott, Bradley and Mac; grandson, Kevin Gatewood. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dickie and Linda Dickerson; daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Johnny Gatewood; grandchildren, Jennifer, Mark, Jessica and Kenny; great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Camryn, Taylor, Ryan, Gina and Jaxson; and other family and friends. He retired from Safeway,Inc. after 40 plus years of service. He was a member of Mechanicsville Baptist Church. His family received family and friends Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd. A funeral service was held Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008 at Bennett Funeral Home, with graveside services occurring at Signal Hill Memorial Park. George “Buck” Dixon, 79, of Mechanicsville, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; sister, Mickey Sullivan; brother, Marvin; children, Russell and Richard Dixon, David Schooff, Jodi Chapman, Terri Snyder; and nine grandchildren. Buck was a veteran of the Korean War and a member of Mechanicsville V.F.W. The family received friends at Bennett’s Funeral Home, Lee-Davis Road, on Monday, Jan. 28, 2008 where the service was held on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008. Graveside services were held in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of VA, the American Cancer Society, or the American Heart Association.
Grace Duffey Palmer, of Highland Springs, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008. One of 11 children of the late Charles F. and Meta Duffey, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Belvin C. Palmer Sr.; one son, Stephen C. Palmer; son-in-law, Paul D. Closs; three brothers, Robert H. “Bob”, Samuel F. “Buddy”, and C. William “Billy” Duffey; five sisters, Ethel M. Gryder, Thelma J. Wallace, Mary C. Cox, Lois R. Snavely, and Florence M. “Sister” Mathews. Grace is survived by her son, Belvin C. “B.C.” Palmer Jr. and wife, Linda, of Gloucester, Va.; daughter, Susan P. Closs and fiancé, Chuck Sydnor, of Staunton, Va.; grandson, Christopher P. Closs and wife, Nicole, of Mechanicsville, Va.; two sisters, Lucille M. Campbell and husband, Robert, of Newport News, Va., and Hazel Cox of Oxford, N.C.; special friends, Robin and Jim Nienaber; and a special thanks to Dr. Roger Capello and his staff for their care. She was retired from Philip Morris USA after 22 years of service and was a member of Village Presbyterian Church. The family received friends Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 22-23 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd. Services were held Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008. Graveside services held at Washington Memorial Park.
Michael J. Vasisko, age 90, of Ashland, went to be with the Lord Jan. 24, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia Vasisko. He is survived by his daughter Ginny Budd, her husband Jim, and their children Chris and Stephanie Budd. He is also survived by son’s Mike Vasisko Jr. and his wife Barbara, and Gerry Vasisko and his wife Margot. He was a member of the VFW and St. Ann’s Parish in Ashland, Va. The family received friends Friday, Jan. 25, 2008 at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, Rt. 301 and Shady Grove Road. A funeral mass was held on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 105 S. Snead Street, Ashland. Graveside services were held at Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
John Luke Walker, 4, of Mechanicsville, smiled and ran into the arms of Jesus on Jan. 21, 2008. He is survived by his parents, Christian and Heidi Walker; his sister, Samantha Grace Walker, who will miss kissing her big Bubba; paternal grandparents, Jim and Judy Ward, John and Shirl Walker; maternal grandparents, Charlie and Kathy Smith, Rod and Cathy Tingley; and his “Bestest Buddy”, Rachel Currier; also, numerous family and friends. He has blessed so many with his smile and unconditional love. The family received friends Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008 in the Woody Funeral Home, Atlee Chapel, 9271 Shady Grove Rd. Services were held Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008 at Fairmount Christian Church. Graveside services were held at Gethsemane Church of Christ Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Fairmount Christian Church in memory of John Luke Walker.
Philip M. (Mike) Welch III, 65, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda M. Welch; his children, Michele Burke and husband, Mike, Philip (Bubba) Welch IV and wife, Teri, Jennifer Welch, and Jackie Welch; four grandchildren, Sarah, Lindsay, Courtney, and Kaitlyn; brother, Donnie Welch; and other family and friends. Family received friends Monday, Jan. 28, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., and where a memorial service was held Tuesday, January 29, 2008.
