Rose Edwards, 81, of Mechanicsville, passed away Feb. 2, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Lena LaRocca; husband, James; sister, Doris Landry; brother, Carlo LaRocca; and daughter, Brenda Click. She is survived by brother, Sam; son, Ron Edwards and wife, Frances; daughter, Sandra Coleman and husband, Willie; six grandchildren, Charlene, Eddie, Cecilia, Gary, Jeffrey and Jennifer; one great-grandchild, Sydney. She was a member of ESA Women’s International. She was a longtime supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital . Her family received friends Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 at Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, Mechanicsville, where funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 8, 2010. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Douglas Green, of Ashland, departed this life Feb. 3, 2010. He leaves to cherish his memory one sister, Kate Winston; one brother, Lawrence Green; three devoted friends, Lorraine Broadnax, Johnny Davis, and Doris Doswell; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Family received friends at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va. 23005, on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010 and where funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 8, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. Interment Georgetown Community Cemetery, Mechanicsville, Va.
Freddie Harold Hazelwood, “Pop”, 83, of Mechanicsville, joined hands with his wife of 55 years, Myrtle Wishon Hazelwood, on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, who preceded him in death. He is survived by a daughter, Carolyn H. Garrett and her husband, Donald; a son, Johnny B. Hazelwood and his wife, Elizabeth; four grandchildren, Donald Garrett Jr., Angela Williams, April Masini and her husband, Mark, and J. Zachary Hazelwood; and three great-grandchildren, Justin, Matthew, and Hannah Williams. He worked for 39 years as a machinist at American Tobacco Company. The family received friends Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 and Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010. Graveside services were held in Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to East Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad or Heartland Hospice.
Bobby Vincent Hill, 79, of Ashland, went to be with the Lord Feb. 2, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Betty L. Hill; his stepson, Gerald Luck and his wife, Nidia; two grandchildren, Wayne and J.W. Sacra. Mr. Hill was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army. He was retired from VDOT and was an avid outdoorsman and gardener. The family received friends Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 at Bliley’s-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., and where a funeral service was held Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010. Graveside services were held in Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association , P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, Virginia 22312.
Yolanda Jackson, 50, of Ashland, departed this life Jan. 30, 2010. She is survived by two children, Lamont and Shante Jackson; three grandchildren; three brothers, Jimmy (Brenda), Alvin and Clinton Jackson. The family received friends at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va. 23005, where funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010. Rev. Bob Morris officiated. Graveside services were held in Roselawn Memory Gardens. No Repast.
Lester Lloyd Sr., 82, of Richmond, departed this life on Feb. 3, 2010 and went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his son, Roger S. Lloyd of Richmond; his parents, Daniel W. and Eva Vest Lloyd; his brother, Daniel D. Lloyd; and his sister, Minnie L. Dalton, all of Lynchburg. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Louise A. Lloyd; his sons, Lester Jr. and his wife, Lynn, David and his wife, Patty, Michael and his wife, Bonnie; his daughter, Deborah Wells and her husband, Richard, of Winter Park, Fla.; 17 grandchildren, Lester III, Patricia, Kathy, Jackie, Angie, Jessica, Richie, Kenna, Wesley, Jared, Megan, Stacy, Holly, Christopher, Emily, Justin, and Matt; 12 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Herman and Jake Lloyd of Lynchburg; and his sisters, Estelle Lawhorn of Rustburg, Jean Edwards and Freda Sowers of Lynchburg, and Betty Coggsdale of Richmond. Lester served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Elmore-APA42 in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Ashland Church of God. Lester had been employed by Reynolds Metals, retiring in July of 1990. He was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Lester had a happy and loving spirit that was contagious, and he will be missed by all. The family received friends on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where services were held Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010. Graveside services followed in Signal Hill Memorial Park. Joel Marable, 29, of Glen Allen, entered into eternal rest on Jan. 31, 2010, at the Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia. In 1999, Joel graduated from Hermitage High School in Henrico County. At James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Va., he majored in finance, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in May 2003. Joel leaves a loving family and a myriad of friends to cherish his memory; his devoted parents, Floyd Joel Marable (Linda) and Marilyn Twitty Marable; brothers, Robert Whitman Marable of Austin, Texas, and Donte and Cedric Draper of Richmond, Va.; grandmother, Retha T. Marable of South Boston, Va.; godmother, Michele Gray Taylor of Sugarland, Texas; three aunts, Anna M. Gee (Willis), Queen M. Scarborough (John C. III), Aretha M. Cunningham (Curtis); one uncle, Walter Twitty; four devoted cousins, Tiffany L. Gee, Tonya C. Bass (Tyric), Willis H. Gee Jr. (Nicole), Curtis Cunningham Jr.;, and countless other relatives and friends. Joel was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Joel Marable of South Boston, Va.; and maternal grandparents, Walter Whitman Twitty and Samella Brown Twitty of Charlotte, N.C. Remains rest at Scott’s Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. The family received guests at The Saint Paul’s Baptist Church, 4247 Creighton Road on Friday, Feb. 5, 2010. Penelope Dicken Mize, “Penny”, 67, of Mechanicsville, went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 1, 2010. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 39 years, Spencer H. Dicken Sr.; and second husband, Bobby E. Mize. She was a longtime active member of Cool Spring Baptist Church, and she enjoyed opening her home on a regular basis in service to the Lord. An avid reader, she enjoyed sewing and hostessing private tea parties. She served as a volunteer for Memorial Regional Hospital, the Gideons and various ministries. Surviving are her children, Lorrie Stroud and husband, Danny, Spencer H. Dicken Jr. and wife, Pam, Becky Harpster and husband, Doug, Lisa Bennett and husband, Dale, David Dicken and wife, Amberlee; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brothers, John E. Donaldson and wife, Sue, Robert M. Donaldson and wife, Mary; and a special friend, John Harrell. The family received friends at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010. Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 at Cool Spring Baptist Church. James Slater, “Rocky”, 54, of Mechanicsville, entered eternal rest on Jan. 29, 2010. To cherish lifelong memories, Rocky leaves his wife, Renee Slater; a stepson, Ronel Lightfoot; a daughter, Andrea Siler (Jonathan); a granddaughter, Janae Siler; three sisters, Inez Carter-Lewis (Ramond), Tonie Robinson (John) and Ozenia Walker (Sam); two brothers, William Slater and Charles Slater (Sheree); two aunts, Elinor Henderson and Claudia Robertson; two devoted friends, Debra Slater and Lonnie Allen; host of other relatives and friends. James Harold Tate Sr., 70, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010. He was the owner of J. Harold Tate Excavating and a member of Reedy Creek Ruritans and Hillcrest Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Lois Fisher Tate; children, Rebecca Ann Tate, James H. Tate Jr. and wife, Rebecca Lee Tate, and Cindy G. Tate and partner, Brian T. Marmaduke; grandchildren, Lynn Peachman and husband, Ken, Holly Anne Cauthorne, Jennifer Tate, Ann Marie Marmaduke, Emma Simulcik and Paige Simulcik; great-grandchildren, Madelyn Peachman and Aiden Myers; a brother, Robert Douglas Tate and wife, Lorraine; and an uncle, David Walsh. The family received friends Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010.
