Josephine Rebecca Carroll, of Mechanicsville, departed this life on Feb. 5, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Thomas Carroll Sr.; her daughter, Doris Woodson; and her sons, William Towles Jr. and Larry Carlton Carroll. She is survived by her children, Ollie B. Carroll Sr., Rebecca Leigh Graff and Joe Thomas Carroll Jr. She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Bonnie Grader; along with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandson. A memorial service was held on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 at The Kingdom Hall in Mechanicsville.

Jeanne Stroud Clarke, 80, of Hanover County, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Feb. 7, 2010. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Carol Lynn Warner. She leaves to cherish her memory her brother, I. Glenn Stroud (Carole) of Abingdon, Va.; her children, Mary D. Lipscomb, Charles F. Derr Jr. (Debbie), Stephen G. Derr, Patricia D. Bevin (Gordon) and N. Bruce Derr; a stepdaughter, Kathy Clarke; her grandchildren, Lacie Lipscomb, Beth Anne Lingor, Brandi Derr, Stephen Derr, Ashley Hawkins, Duke and Paul Bevins; her great-grandchildren, Darrah Davis, Gavin Bevins, James Parker and Makennah Hawkins; also her two lifelong friends, Shirley B. Mangrum and Phyllis McIntire. Her grace, beauty and love will be missed by all that knew her. The family received friends on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, also where funeral services were conducted Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, with graveside services being held in Washington Memorial Park. Franklin Delano Cooke Sr., 76, of Hanover, passed away Feb. 9, 2010. He was born in Richmond’s Fan District on May 5, 1933. He was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Wardella “Del” Merle Cooke; and brother, Robert “Bobby” Parker Cooke. He is survived by his two devoted sons, Franklin D. Cooke Jr. of Powhatan and Jeffrey S. Cooke and his wife, Trisha Cooke, of Varina; granddaughter, Jessica Nicole Cooke of Midlothian; grandson, Nathan Hunter Cooke of Powhatan; a sister-in-law, Fran Cooke; and long-time companion and friend, Tess James of Richmond. Mr. Cooke was retired from Philip Morris USA after 36 years of employment. Before that he sold residential bomb shelters in Richmond, and served as an Airman in the United States Air Force until February 1953. The family received friends at the Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Parkway, Mechanicsville, Va. 23111, Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, and where funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 12, 2010. Rev. Mat Brown of Branch’s Baptist Church officiated. Graveside services were held at Signal Hill Cemetery in Hanover, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Henry Carroll Hankley, 88, of Mechanicsville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, a member of Blandford Lodge #3 AF&AM, retired manager of Southern States and a longtime member of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Burley Tisdale Hankley. Surviving are sons, A. Tildon Hankley and wife, Cindy, Vincent Hankley and wife, Carol; Vincent’s children, Hunter Hankley and wife, Shel, Holly and Heather Hankley; Tildon’s children, Reid Hankley, Bevin Steverson and husband, Jon; and their mother, Jane Hankley; great-grandson, Dawson; and sisters, Elizabeth Cage and Verna Hamner. The family received friends Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010 at the Mechanicsville Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where services were held Monday, Feb. 15, 2010. Elsie N. Harris, of Old Church, widow of Lemuel E. Harris, passed peacefully with her family by her side Feb. 9, 2010. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Lou Hayes. She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Tellis and husband, Leonard, and Elaine Gardner and husband, Dave; a sister, Mary Dvorak; a son-in-law, Charles Hayes; grandchildren, Faith, Hope, Sarah Anne, Crystal, Matthew and Cassy; and four great-grandchildren. The family received friends Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 at the Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville. Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 at Immanuel Episcopal Church, Old Church. Graveside services were held in the church cemetery. George Steven Hepner, 56, of Mechanicsville, passed away Monday, Feb. 8, 2010. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hilda Shaver Johnson; and his father, George Douglas Hepner. He is survived by his sister, Sharon Hepner; his son, Steven Hepner and wife, Barbara and their daughter, Veronica; his daughter, Tiffany Hepner and her daughter, Alexis Jackson. Also numerous cousins and friends, especially Sharon K. He had a passion for motorcycles, civil war and golf. He was a veteran of the Army and National Guard. He will be missed.

Dr. John H. Hewlett III, formerly of Ashland, noted West Chester Area School District educator, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, with his wife of 36 years, Lt. Col. (ret.) Mary Wallace Hewlett by his side. In addition to his wife, he leaves to cherish his memory, one sister, Thelma Hewlett Hart of Richmond, Va., and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, at the Henderson High School Auditorium, Montgomery Avenue, West Chester, Pa. Graveside services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010 in Cedar Hills Cemetery, Baltimore, Md. Contributions in his memory can be made to the Dr. John H. Henry Nathaniel Hill Jr., “Junnie”, departed this life Friday, Feb. 5, 2010. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry N. Hill Sr.; mother, Elizabeth O. Hill; and brother, Henry Eugene Hill. He leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving and devoted daughter, Shenalda O. Taylor and her mother, Sheila Taylor; his stepson, Renaldo Taylor; five sisters, M. Ann Watson, Pearl Johnson, Vernell Beatrice Stubblefield, Florence William and Denise Green; four brothers, Walter, Herman, Samuel and Stuart Hill; aunt, Vernell Gersham; and a very large host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, among them Joe Tinsley and Jerry Cosby. David N. Hodges Sr., 72, of Ashland, went to be with the Lord Feb. 10, 2010. He is survived by wife, Mildred; his children, David Jr. and Steve Hodges, Cindy Rimmer; stepchildren, Betty Charette, Nancy Phinney, Marie Merrill, Robert La Mere Jr.; 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Tom, Dick and Bob; three sisters, Sue Wright, Bessie Peterson and Dorothy Wilhite; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. The family received friends on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 at Perkins Baptist Church. Graveside services were held in the church cemetery. Elsie Mae Perdue Jones, 94, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 8, 2010. She was the widow of Wilton G. Jones. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Jones Hayes and husband, Lloyd A. Hayes; grandson, Michael A. Hayes. She was retired from Philip Morris and a member of the Mechanicsville Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, and a longstanding member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. The family received friends Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Graveside services were held Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 at Signal Hill. Laura Dawn Peters Jones, 37, of Mechanicsville, went peacefully with the angels and entered God’s presence early Valentine’s morning, Feb. 14, 2010. She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Chris and their precious children, Mariah 18, Hunter 11, and Ashtyn 7; her mama, Sharon Meador Rice, and dad, J. Craig Peters; brother, Sean and Missy Peters and their children; sister, Katie and Dennis Finley and their children; grandparents, Garland and Helen Meador. She was predeceased by her “Daddy Jim” Rice. Survived by parents-in-love, Bill and Joan Jones; Chris’ sister, Missi and Dave Outhous and their children; Chris’ brothers, Michael and Carol Jones and their children, and Andy and Jennifer Jones and their child; Chris’ grandfather, Lewis Morgan; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Laura is also survived by a faithful and devoted friend, Camey Chiles. For six years Laura fought cancer with grace and dignity, always to the glory of God. Wilbur H. King, “War”, 77, of Ashland (Brown Grove), went home to be with the Lord, Feb. 10, 2010 at his home surrounded by his loving and devoted family. He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Grace; his parents, Thomas and Missouri King; brothers, Thomas, Alfred and his twin brother, Willie. War attended Hanover County Public Schools graduating from John M. Gandy. War loved his family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and NASCAR. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was employed by Kelly Truck Stop, Virginia Hauling Trucking and retired from Reynolds Metals in 1993. Left to cherish his memories, is his daughter, Sherry Hunter (John); one sister, Romaine King; a special friend, Bessie Braxton; one grandson, Wesley King; one granddaughter, Tyisha Odera (Kevin); five sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews other relaives and friends; including devoted, Jethro Carter, Pearl Harris, Lawrence Jones and David Carter. Warren W. Southard, died Feb. 8, 2010. He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie N. Southard, M.D. and her husband, Rick Morgan; grandson, Hunter Cole Morgan; sister, Edith S. Patricia Osborne Tyler, 68, of Mechanicsville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles C. and Neola Edwards Osborne. She is survived by her husband, Henry R. Tyler; two children, Michael J. Tyler (Ann) and Cynthia T. Pack (Robert); three brothers, Cecil Osborne, Richard Osborne, and Butch Osborne; ten grandchildren, Stacy Frances and Patricia Lee Tyler, Brett and Georgia Francis, Alice, Amy, and Autumn Pack, Joey, Tyler, and Kirsten Jordan; one aunt, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family received friends Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 at Nelsen Funeral Home and Crematory, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va., where funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010. Patricia Steele Vick, 61, of Manquin, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010. She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Richard Eanes. Surviving are her husband, Russell Wayne Vick Sr.; children, Shelly Patterson Reed and husband, Donnie, Harold Wayne Patterson and wife, Amanda, Russell Wayne Vick Jr. and wife, Terri, Michelle Munoz and husband, Oscar; nine grandchildren; mother, Clarice Eanes Gill; sister and brothers, Alicia Stover and husband, John, Ricky Eanes and wife, Donna, Jimmy Eanes and wife, Lei, Tommy Eanes and wife, Gina. Memorial services were held Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 at Atlee Community Church, 7171 Verdi Lane, Mechanicsville, Va. 23116. Stewart Estes Wood, of Ashland, passed away on Feb. 3, 2010. He was born on May 11, 1926 in Eastern Henrico County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah Yelpton and Susan Estes Wood; sisters, Frances, Eula “Ann,” Pearl; and brothers, Elmer, Harry, Russell, Charles and Woodrow. He is survived by his sister, Earna Chichester of Dover, Del.; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by close friends, Dieter and Leslie Bachmann. While serving his country in the Navy he began his love of travel that continued throughout his life. He cherished the trips that he took with both family and friends. After leaving the Navy he began a career in banking working at several local banks in the Doswell, Hanover and Mechanicsville areas. After his retirement he continued to work at Wood’s Store located north of Parham Road on Route 1 until his second retirement. Throughout his life he devoted his time to genealogy research and published a Wood Family book. The family received friends Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 and Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road. Graveside services followed at Greenwood Cemetery.

Warren Whitney Wyatt, “Bubba”, age 76, of Mechanicsville, passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 6, 2010. He retired from Babcock-Phillips after 33 years of service. He was predeceased by his father, Clarence Wyatt; and brother, Granville “Bobby” Wyatt. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy “Dot” Lewis Wyatt of Mechanicsville; his wife, Barbara Roper Wyatt; sons, Warren Wyatt Jr. and wife, Sheryl, of Mechanicsville, Michael Wyatt and wife, Mitzi, of Virginia Beach, and Scott Wyatt and wife, Terri, also of Mechanicsville; his grandchildren, Warren “Wren,” Leanna, and Mallory Wyatt, all of Mechanicsville; and a sister-in-law, Jeannie Roper Whiteside. He is also survived by an aunt, niece, several nephews and cousins. The family received friends Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville.
