John Ashby Bowden Jr., 64, of Courtland, Va., departed this life on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008. He was born in Portsmouth, Va., the son of the late John Ashby Bowden and Mary Baldwin Bowden. He served in the United States Army from 1966 through 1969. He proudly served the Commonwealth as a Virginia State Trooper for 25 years and retired as a First Sergeant in 1996. He was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and the Police Administrators Training Program at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He was predeceased by his precious daughter, Dina Christine Bowden; and sister, Shirley “Cheryl” Rainone. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Jennifer Bowden DeBruhl; son-in-law, Mark; and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life was conducted Monday, Feb. 25, 2008 at Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Mechanicsville. Graveside services were private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia State Police Association Scholarship Fund, 6944 Forest Hill Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23225.
Patti Ann Crodick, of Mechanicsville, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008 due to complications related to chronic illness. She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 40 years, William J. Crodick Jr.; her four children, William J. Crodick III and wife, Emily, Susan Lynn Coble and husband, Shawn, James Stewart Crodick and Erin Elizabeth Crodick; and two grandchildren, Meghan Elizabeth Coble and William J. Crodick IV. A Memorial Mass to celebrate her life was held Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 8200 Woodman Rd. Monaghan Funeral Home handling arrangements.
Peggy Cox Harris, 43, of Manquin, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008. She was preceded in death by her father, C. Russell Cox. She is survived by her loving husband of 15 years, Matt; and her two children, Emily and Andrew; her mother, Anne M. Cox; two sisters, Mary Ellen Bandy and husband, Steve, Diane Owecke and husband, Jim; mother-in-law, Gladys H. Harris; and sister-in-law, Kim Thompson and husband, Tommy. Peggy taught at Liberty Christian School. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and Christian who will be missed by all. The family received friends Saturday and Sunday Feb. 23 and 24 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 25, 2008. Graveside services followed in Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Mattaponi Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 15, Walkerton, Va. 23117 or to Gethsemane Church of Christ, 5146 Mechanicsville Tpke., Mechanicsville, Va. 23111.
John “Jack” Randolph Newbill, 84, of Richmond, formerly of Roanoke, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008. He was the widower of Betty Moore Newbill. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Anne Newbill Burke; son-in-law, Lowndes Burke; and grandchildren, Thomas, Maria, Marshall and Ranny Burke. For many years, Jack owned and operated Roanoke Apple Products Company. He was an avid sailor and a founding member of Virginia Inland Sailing Association (VISA) at Smith Mountain Lake. A memorial service for Jack and Betty will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Roanoke, Va., in early spring.
James King “Jimmy” Polk, 60, of Richmond, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008. He was a member of the band, Sierra. Surviving are a brother, Douglas T. Polk of California; former wife, Sharon Fisher of Sandston; and daughter-at-heart, Cierra. Memorial services were held Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road.
James Melvin Stone, 56, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 22, 2008. He was preceded in death by his father, James Luther Stone; and grandmother, Grace L. Parker. Surviving are his mother, Ann Stone; sisters, Gail Stone, Barbara Rigsby and husband, Steve; brother, Phillip Stone; niece, Angela Gooch and husband, Michael; nephew, Travis Rigsby; and great-niece, Madison Gooch. The family received friends Sunday and Monday Feb. 24 and 25 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd. Graveside services were held Tuesday Feb. 26, 2008 at 11 a.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Jean B. Trice, 80, of Richmond, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008. She was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Harris; a brother, Ira Barden Jr.; and brother-in-law, Theodore Woody. She is survived by her husband, Hunter G. Trice; sons, Donald G. Trice and wife, Tammy, Ronald G. Trice and wife, Laureen, and Kenneth R. Barnett and wife, Mary; three granddaughters, Michelle, Kristen and Ashley Trice; brothers and sisters, Evelyn Dawson and husband, Linwood, Doug Barden and wife, Trevie, Barbara Reid and husband, Patrick, Mildred Woody and Milton Barden; sister-in-law, Barbara Barden. The family received friends Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road. A funeral service was held Monday, Feb. 25, 2008 at Fairmount Christian Church, 6502 Creighton Road, Mechanicsville, Va. 23111. Graveside services followed at Washington Memorial Park.
