Joseph Walker Atkinson Jr., 69, of Glen Allen, passed away Feb. 22, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Marie H. Atkinson; children, David Walker Atkinson, Kim Marie Adkins, and Rhonda Atkinson; three sisters, Joyce Ann Johnson, Mary Mills and Linda Crisp; three brothers, John O., David Lee and Irvin Atkinson; and two grandchildren, Sierra Atkinson and Sydney Richardson. The family received friends Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010 at Bliley’s -Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Road. A service was held Friday, Feb. 26, 2010 in the Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Julia M. Davidson, 60, of Aylett, passed away Feb. 25, 2010. She is survived by her husband, Harley; daughter, Becki (Randy) Kemp; granddaughter, Morgan; and sister, Betty Myers of Pensacola, Fla. Rosser Garnett Dunn III, “Buck”, passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010. He was a retired brick mason, and a member of Chester Moose Lodge. Surviving are his wife, Diane C. Dunn; children, Robert Dunn, Chris Dunn and wife, Sharon, Donnie Dunn and wife, Ginny, and Jo “Sissy” Coffey and husband, Warner; stepchildren, Patricia Madison and husband, Clyde, and Tricia Ruffin; grandson, Joshua Coffey; four step grandchildren; sisters, Nancy Ball and Barbara Dodd; brothers, Sterling Dunn and Eddie Dunn. Charles McKim Fleet Sr., “Chuck”, age 64, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord Friday, Feb. 26, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Carol; a son, Charles McKim Fleet Jr. and wife, Jennifer; a daughter, Cynthia F. Smith and husband, Jeffrey; a brother, Robert B. Fleet Jr. and wife, Joyce; two sisters, Marjorie F. Snead and husband, Kent, and Barbara “Skeet” F. Hobbs and husband, David; grandchildren, Zachary Powell Griffin and Charles “Trey” McKim Fleet III, Jeffrey Patterson Smith Jr., Fleet Robertson Smith and Judson Webber Smith; and many nieces and nephews. The family received friends Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010 at the Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Parkway, Mechanicsville. A celebration of Chuck’s life was held Monday, March 1, 2010 at New Song United Methodist Church, 7450 Colt’s Neck Road, Mechanicsville, Va. 23111. Chuck owned and operated West Store in Old Church for over 30 years and was very passionate about his grandchildren and sports. Mary M. Harris, “Matlene”, of Ashland, departed this life Feb. 19, 2010. She is survived by her husband, Carnell Harris; one daughter Farrah N. Harris; mother, Mary Mines; and two sisters, Frances and Cathy Mines. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010 at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Dr. John W. Kinney officiated. Graveside services were held in the church cemetery.
Dorothy Hixon, “Miss Dot”, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010. Miss Dot was a faithful servant at Meadowbridge Seventh-day Adventist Church in Mechanicsville. She participated in women’s ministry, prison ministry, homeless ministry, and taught Sabbath School. She is survived by her mother, Juanita King; three sons, Johnny Hixon, Steve Hixon and Chris Hixon; two daughters, Kathy Hixon and Joni Fontes; eight grandchildren, and many other relatives and close friends. Memorial services were held at Southpoint Seventh-day Adventist Church in Jacksonville, Fla.
Doris Hughes King, 89, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lawrence King. She is survived by her daughter, Sue King; granddaughter, Amanda Thompson as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family at Hanover Health Care. Doris was a lifetime member of Gethsemane Church of Christ, from where she also retired as the church secretary. Remains rest at Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where the family received friends Monday, March 1, 2010 and where services were held Tuesday, March 2, 2010. Graveside services were held at Gethsemane Church of Christ Cemetery.
Nora Crowell Bryant Monroe, 85, of Ashland, passed away Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Joseph Edmunds Monroe Sr. of Ashland; daughter, Elizabeth Lee Monroe of Richmond; son, Joseph Edmunds Monroe Jr. and his wife, Patricia Louise Monroe, of Richmond; two grandchildren, Madeline Grace Monroe and Lauren Elizabeth Monroe; two nieces, Carol Johnson Medlin of Roanoke, and Robyn Ann Johnson of Durham, N.C.; nephew, Dean Wakefield Johnson of Durham, N.C.; great-niece, Shenan Medlin Mooring of Nashville, N.C.; great-nephew, Justin Shawn Mooring of Durham, N.C.; a cousin, Dr. Gerald Don Nelson Bryant Jr. of Tallahassee, Fla. Mrs. Monroe was born in Durham, N.C. and was raised in the Southern Conservatory of Music in Durham founded by her grandfather, G. W. Bryant. She attended Duke University and graduated from Mary Washington College with a degree in music. She later taught music in Havre de Grace, Md. and High Point, N.C. School System prior to moving to Virginia where she taught in the Hanover County School System at Battlefield Park, East End and Cold Harbor Elementary Schools, before retiring in 1989. She was passionate about music and teaching and loved her faculty and students dearly. Mrs. Monroe was preceded in death by her sister, Maxine W. Bryant Brady of Durham, N.C. Lori Rawls Parvaiz, 33, of Glen Allen, passed away Monday, Feb. 22, 2010. She is survived by her son, Aiden Parvaiz; husband, Omar Parvaiz; parents, Jean and Tom Rawls; three brothers, Christopher, Stephen and Mark Rawls; grandparents, Rose and Van Dooley; mother-in-law, Meena Gupta; father-in-law, Parvaiz Ahmad; brothers-in-law, Osman and Salman Parvaiz; sisters-in-law, Adela Parvaiz and Ginny Rawls; niece, Abigail Rawls; nephew, Mikhail Parvaiz; and adoring aunts and uncles. Lori was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt and friend. Lori’s generous spirit and zest for life continues to thrive amongst us through the love she shared with her family and friends, and through her son, Aiden, who was born Jan. 24, 2010. Even though Lori and Aiden were together for only 4 weeks before she passed, she leaves him with an abundance of love and a legacy of generosity that will keep him warm for a lifetime. We will celebrate her life as much as we will miss her presence. We will miss her wisdom which drove many of our family decisions; her modesty which humbled us all, and her beautiful smile which turned around all frowns. We will use her spirit as a beacon until we are reunited with her in the afterlife. Geraldine A. Pollard, 79, passed away on Feb. 27, 2010 after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald of 50 years and brother, Gary L. Zimmerman. She leaves behind a loving family of two daughters, Susan Wilburn and Cheryl Peek; two sons-in-law, Steve Wilburn and Pete Peek; granddaughter, Dawn Wilburn; and brother, Alfred “Punky” Zimmerman Jr. Originally from Findlay, Ohio, she met her late husband in Walter Reed Hospital during the Korean War while he was convalescing from a war injury. She spent most of her working career and retired from Defense General Supply Center as a cataloger after 30 years of service. She was a long time member of the Meadowbridge Seventh Day Adventist Church. She will be remembered by many for her loving smile, crazy crochet work and love of traveling. She was a lifelong Redskins fan attending many games including a super bowl to cheer them on. Rather than a graveside service or flowers, the family request donations be made to the Humane Society or East Hanover Fire Fighter and Rescue Squad.
Doris Mae Shaw, 79, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010 at Alpha House in Ashland. She was born June 21, 1930 in Blackstone, the daughter of Bud and Manie Humphries. Doris retired from A.H. Robins Company in 1990 working in manufacturing for 32 years. She enjoyed gardening, reading and cooking. She is survived by her son, Cecil Haskins III and wife, Lynne, of Montpelier; her daughter, Cecelia Walsh and husband, Greg; and grandson, G.K. Walsh, all of Glen Allen. The family received friends Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St. Graveside services were private. Mazie Arnette Snow, of Ashland, entered into eternal life, on Wednesday, Feb. 24th, 2010 surrounded by her family. Mazie was born June 21, 1948 in Ashland. Born to the late Ann Ragland and Claude Chisholm, of Ashland. She is survived by parents, Jim and Virginia White; one son, Lawrence “Larry” Snow; Daughter-in-law, Monica Snow; two grandchildren, Michael Snow and Jackie Snow; three sisters, Lois Swearengin, Eloise Hackett and Hazeltine Wyatt; two brothers, Ray Chisholm and James Chisholm; five nephews and seven nieces and a long list of friends who she considered family. Ellison W. Stanley, 67, of Mechanicsville, went home to be with the Lord and his wife, Diane, on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010. Surviving are his daughter, Diana Hamblen and husband, Arthur; son, John Stanley; three grandchildren, Violet Stanley, James Stanley and DeAnne Hamblen; a host of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Eleanor Coleman Durham Wallace, 94, of Imperial Plaza, Richmond, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas E. Coleman Sr. and Jennie Crow Coleman; husbands, William Franklin Durham III and Wilbur B. Wallace; and brother, Thomas E. Coleman Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Durham Rosebro and husband, Randolph C. Rosebro, Ann Durham Strawn and husband, Robert Strawn Jr., Katherine Wallace Young and husband, Richard T. Young; sister, Mildred Coleman Oatman and husband, O.L. “Pat” Oatman; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces. James Willis, “Everett”, 93, of Glen Allen, passed away Feb. 26, 2010. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Faye Kirby. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Merle Willis; his daughter, Susan Belden and her husband, John; four grandchildren, Katie Watts and her husband, Terry, Kristie Willis, Amanda Belden and Greg Kirby; and five great-grandchildren. He was a World War II Navy veteran from 1941-1945, a member of the American Legion Post #244, and worked as an insurance agent for over 50 years. He was an avid gardener, nature lover, and bird enthusiast. He will be greatly missed. There was a celebration of life service on Monday, March 1, 2010, at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, Route 301 and Shady Grove Road. Contributions may be made to the American Legion or the American Cancer Society.
Yoshio Yamaki, 86, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Honolulu, Hawaii, died Feb. 9, 2010. He leaves his wife, Norma Shimaura; daughter, Georgia Terwilliger (David) of Mechanicsville; sons, Robert (Carol) of San Diego, Calif. and David (Julie) of Glen Mills, Pa.; and grandsons, Jacob, Noah, Forest and Glen. After working many years at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, he graduated from Georgia Tech in Atlanta and worked at NASA in Hampton, Va., where he retired after 17 years. He was a member of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers. His pastimes included trailer- traveling the country with family and later in a self-converted van for two. He liked to golf, bowl and fish. Ceramics, bowling and Bridge were his passions in later years. His family wishes to thank the medical and nursing staff and friends for their support.
