Gladys C. Browder, of Mechanicsville, widow of James C. Browder, departed this life Friday, Feb. 29, 2008. She is survived by her daughters, Linda B. McLaughlin and the late James E. McLaughlin, Theresa B. Owens and James R. Owens Jr.; three grandchildren, Matthew C. Owens and his wife, Kristen Owens, Kevin W. Owens and Stephanie N. Owens; one great-grandchild, Hailey Madison Owens. She is also survived by one brother, Chuck Mayberry and wife, Shirley; and one sister, Gloria Stallings; three sisters-in-law, Annette McCormick, Pearl Reynolds and Pauline Medlin; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She is also survived by two surrogate daughters who adopted and cared for her, Suzanne Alexander and Chris Hedgepeth. The family received friends Saturday March 1, 2008 and Sunday March 2, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road. Dorothy F. “Dot” Carder, of Richmond, died Feb. 26, 2008 at Beth Sholom Home. She was the widow of Arthur D. Carder Sr.; and is survived by two sons, Arthur D. Carder Jr. and wife, Maureen, William J. Carder and wife, Paula; a daughter, Gail Butler and husband, Bev; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family received friends at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Parkway, Mechanicsville, Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008 and where the funeral service was held Friday, Feb. 29, 2008. Graveside services were held in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Carder was retired from The Defense General Supply Center and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Darin James Herbert, 39, born Aug. 3, 1968 in Morgan City, La. departed this earth on Feb. 13, 2008 in Mechanicsville. He graduated from Lafayette High School, and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1994. He is survived by, and was the son of, Carol T. Sincox and Mr. and Mrs. James Hebert. He was the grandchild of Mrs. Lillie Hebert and the late Bernie J. Herbert, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Tompkins. He was also the brother of Julie Smith, Connie Sonnier, Byron Sincox, Seth Herbert, and B.J. Hebert; and special friend Leah Arcenaux. Darin was a person who left a mark on everyone he met and had many, many friends. He was a wonderful uncle to his nieces and nephews who loved him very much. We will miss you deeply, but one day we will be together again, “Deeda”. You are gone but never forgotten. Funeral services were held in Louisiana for immediate family members on Monday, Feb. 18, 2008. A celebration of his life was held Saturday, Mar. 1, 2008 at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville.
Kenneth Harlan Howard, Jr., 74, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008. He was retired from Continental Baking Co. Surviving are his wife, Shirley A. Howard; sons, Fred and Scott Howard; granddaughter, Krystal; cherished great-grandson, Noah E. Grant. Services were private.
Barbara Lewis Jones, 62, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 22, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton A. Jones Jr. Surviving are her daughters, Renee Jones and Margaret Scott (Steve); son, Rod Propes; sister, Shirley Hennessy Reveley; brother, Bernard W. Lewis; brother-in-law, Paul Jones (Cindy); nieces and nephews; special friends, Judy and Ed, Elizabeth, Martha and Deborah. Family received friends Monday, Feb. 24, 2008 and Tuesday Feb. 25, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where services were conducted Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2008. Graveside services were held in Signal Hill Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Sharyn Hooker Jones, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008. She was preceded in death by her mother, Florence Marie Hooker, and is survived by her husband of 37 years, Hunter F. Jones III; two daughters, Ann Marie Bell and husband, Greg, of Chesapeake and Allison Layne and husband, Matt, of Mechanicsville; five grandchildren, Caroline, Hunter and Natalie Bell and Juliana and Brendan Layne; father and stepmother, Fred and Joyce Hooker of Yakima, Wash.; two sisters, Norene Flynn of Sherman Oaks, Calif. and Diane Miller and husband, Kim, of Bellevue, Wash.; one brother, Gary Hooker of Ferndale, Wash.; as well as several nieces and nephews. The family received friends Sunday, March 2, 2008, at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, and where services were held Monday, March 3, 2008, Graveside services were held at Signal Hill Memorial Park. Deloris Ann (Beadles) Martin, 75, completed her earthly journey on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008 and went to be with her Heavenly Father. She had been a faithful member at Fairmount Christian Church since 1956. On Nov. 4, 1950, she was united in marriage to Floyd Ellis Martin, who survives her along with their two children, son, Stephen D. Martin and wife, Neva; daughter, Kimberly A. Powell and husband, Mark. She also has four grandchildren, Nathan Martin, Jennifer Martin, Sarah Phillips and husband, Jonathan, and Laura Heath and husband, Trevor. She was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Morrison. She has two sisters, Arlene Peace and Evelyn Coleman and husband, Waverly. The family received friends Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008 at Bennett’s Funeral Home, Mechanicsville. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008 at Fairmount Christian Church. Graveside services were held at Gethsemane Church of Christ. Flowers are welcome or, if preferred, contributions can be made to Fairmount Christian Church Building Fund.
Steven A. McAuley-Pitts, 43, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Feb. 22, 2008. He was born in Richmond, Va. on May 4, 1964. He is survived by his parents, Roland and Ada Lee McAuley Pitts; a brother, Eric Pitts and his wife, Angie; a sister, Amanda Tyler and her husband, Chris; and two nephews, Andrew Pitts and Patrick Harvey. Mr. McAuley-Pitts graduated from Lee-Davis High School, where he received a couple of scholarships, was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, on the football team, and a cheerleader. After graduating from high school, he attended Ferrum College, where he was inducted into the Stoneleigh Honorary Scholar Society. He then transferred and graduated from James Madison University in 1986, having received an ROTC Scholarship. He was tapped into The National Society of Scabbard and Blade, an ROTC honor society. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army with a tour of duty in Germany. After his military service, he worked as a human resource auditor. He was a member of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church. He was a former member of the Army Navy Club, the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, which was founded in the 12th Century to aid those suffering and defend the Christian faith. He was awarded the title Lord D’Arleston by the Queen’s Court of England, given to few Americans. The memorial service was held at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church on Sunday, March 2, 2008. The Rev. Rebekah Johns and the Rev. Merle L. Fisher officiated. Graveside services were held in Evergreen Cemetery in Charlotte, N.C. H.S. “Sam” Moran, age 92, of Mechanicsville, passed away Feb. 25, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife Martha Jane Moran. He is survived by his sons; Kenneth S. Moran and wife Faye, and H. Wayne Moran and wife Ellen. He is also survived by grandchildren; Jennifer L. Moran, Patrick S. Moran, Kristopher T. Moran and wife Melanie, sister Bessie Wells, and a host of relatives and friends. He was a lifetime member of Fairmount Christian Church. The family received friends Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, Rt. 301 and Shady Grove Road. Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at the funeral home. Graveside services were held in Signal Hill Memorial Park. William “Bill” Francis Philip, 82, departed this life Feb. 29, 2008. Kathleen Dolan Philip, his beloved and loving wife of 58 years, survives him, as do his three devoted children, Patricia Kathleen Philip, William Patrick Philip and Debra Philip Mitchell; his three loving grandchildren, Wesley Fleming Mallory Jr., Ashley Philip Mallory and Margo Page Mitchell; his infant great-grandson, Nolan Ashley Mallory; his son-in-law, Tom Mitchell; and granddaughter-in-law, Tracey Gray Mallory. Bill’s two brothers, John J. Philip Jr. and Charles Frederick Philip also survive him; as do nieces and nephews and numerous loving family members in Virginia, New York, Ohio, Vermont and Maryland. A Mass of the Resurrection was held Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at the Church of the Redeemer, 8275 Meadowbridge Road, Mechanicsville, followed by burial at Signal Hill Cemetery, Route 301. Born December 18, 1925 in New York City to parents, Harry and Elsie Josephine Harvey Philip, he started his journey as a self-made man at the age of 17 when he volunteered for the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific Theatre until he was honorably discharged in 1945. He soon met the love of his life, Kathleen Dolan, whom he married within a few months of meeting and who shared with him almost six decades as best friends and devoted partners. He was an electrician with VEPCO until he started his second career at age 40 in the new field of data processing. After rebuilding two houses single-handedly and completing his college education, he and Kathleen relocated from Mechanicsville to Center Cross before returning to Mechanicsville ten years ago. He spent the best years of his life on the Rappahannock River fishing, crabbing, boating, gardening and making endless home improvements. Years of researching family genealogy culminated in an extensive family tree complete with archival photographs of his and Kathleen’s families. By retirement, he had made his professional mark as a founding father of Medicaid and Medicare data processing programs for the State of Virginia. Bill was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Tappahannock American Legion, and served as Boy Scout leader, among other activities. In health and throughout his uncomplaining and valiant struggle with Parkinson’s, he will be remembered by those who had the good fortune to know him as mischievous, hard working, curious, inventive, spirited, happy, jovial and witty. With his dancing eyes and love of laughter, he made the world a better place.
James Melvin Stone, 56, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 22, 2008. He was preceded in death by his father, James Luther Stone; and grandmother, Grace L. Parker. Surviving are his mother, Ann Stone; sisters, Gail Stone, Barbara Rigsby and husband, Steve; brother, Phillip Stone; niece, Angela Gooch and husband, Michael; nephew, Travis Rigsby; and great-niece, Madison Gooch. The family received friends Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008 and Monday Feb. 25, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd. Graveside services were held Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008 in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Annie Mae Childress Wheeler, 82, of Mechanicsville, passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph C. Wheeler; her parents, Clara V. and John W. Childress; and her brother, Earnest F. Hatcher. She is survived by her son, William L. Spangler and wife, Carol A. Spangler; a beloved sister, Doris H. Shufflebarger and husband, Andrew, of Richmond; two brothers, Buford W. Childress and wife, Maxine, of Huron, Ohio, and John L. Childress and wife, Naina, of Kingston, Tenn.; four grandchildren, W. Bryan Spangler, Deborah M. Spangler, John W. Spangler and wife, Amy, and Elizabeth A. Haile and husband, Michael; five great-grandchildren, J. Travis Spangler, Lindsay N. Spangler, M. John Haile, Jr., Mackenzie G. Spangler, and Ashley E. Haile; and three step-great-grandchildren, Taylor C. Kidd, W. Raelynn Newsome, and Samuel J. Newsome. She is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews. Mrs. Wheeler was a longtime employee and retiree of A.H. Robins. Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Graveside services followed at Signal Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Frasia R. White, Jr., 56, of Mechanicsville, passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Vivian White; three children, Roland F. “Lanny” White III, Randall Corie White and Lorraine White Baltz and husband, Corey Adam Baltz; as well as two grandsons, Damien Parrish and C. Adam Baltz Jr. Frasia retired from Philip Morris after 30 years of service. The family received friends at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., Tuesday Feb. 26, 2008 and Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008 and where services were held Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008. Graveside services were held in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Ray Tisdale Wills, 93, died Feb. 28, 2008, in Sentara Obici Hospital. Born in Wattsboro, Lunenburg County, Va. she was the daughter of the late Ray Tucker Smith and Alvan R. Tisdale and widow of Gurney Eugene Wills. She was preceded in death by her son, Eugene Austin Wills. Mrs. Wills was a member of Reedy Chapel Christian Church of Lunenburg County and after coming to Suffolk, joined her husband’s church, Main Street Methodist Church. She was a member of the Wesley Bible Class and the United Methodist Women’s Circle #1. Mrs. Wills was also a member of the Suffolk Women’s Club. Survivors include three daughters: Betty Wills Potter of Newport News, Martha Wills Glenn of Millboro, and Marjorie Ray Wills of Suffolk; grandchildren, Elizabeth Potter McBee, Theodore Wade Potter, Jr., Kristen Potter Nelson, John Berkeley Glenn, Jay Austin Glenn, Angela Knight Hannan, Jack Charles Knight, Jr., and Allison Knight Mayo; great grandchildren, Katelyn and Shelby Mitchell, Brandon Potter, Sydney and Kaleb Nelson, Patrick and Aidan Glenn, Owen Glenn, Margo and Kade Hannan, Jackalyn and Juliette Knight, Jack and Grace Mayo; sister, Christine Tisdale Litch of Northbrook, Ill.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday, Mar. 2, 2008 in the R. W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home and Crematory by the Rev. Robert J. Parks with graveside services held in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family received friends in the funeral home Saturday, Mar. 1, 2008 and other times at the home in Suffolk.
