Roger W. Cappello Sr., 94, passed away Sunday, Mar. 2, 2008 at the home of his son in Mechanicsville. Born September 10, 1913 in Whitehall, N.Y., he was the son of the late Agostino and Maria (Simone) Cappello. Roger was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Glens Falls, N.Y. He was a 43-year employee of A & P Food Store, retiring as the meat manager. Roger’s enjoyments in life centered around his family, gardening, and his work. He was an avid sports fan. He followed his own children’s sports activities when they were in school. In his later years, he loved to attend his grandchildren’s games. Roger was predeceased by his wife, Jean Goddard Cappello, of Rutland, Vt., who died in 1993; a son, William Deane Cappello, who died in 1995; two brothers, Frank Cappello and Patsy Cappello; two sisters, Nellie Voccia and Christina Grasso. Survivors include his three sons, Winston Russel Beebe and his wife, Maureen, of Chattanooga, Tenn., Dr. Roger Cappello and his wife, June, of Mechanicsville, and Paul Cappello and his wife, Paula, of Rehoboth, Mass.; his daughter, Patsy Green of Glens Falls, N.Y.; his brother, Nicholas Cappello of Haddonfield, N.J.; two sisters-in-law, Irene Cappello of Brasher, N.Y. and Edith Cappello of Cohoes, N.Y.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held on Thursday, Mar. 6, 2008 at Regan and Denny Funeral Home, 53 Quaker Road, Queensbury, N.Y. Graveside services were held at Bay Street Cemetery, Glens Falls, N.Y. Joshua M. Coffey, 24, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Mar. 3, 2008. As a baseball coach, he touched hundreds of young lives by influencing them with his love for the game. Josh had played professionally with the Florida Marlins and Cincinnati Reds organizations. Surviving are his parents, Michael W. and Leigh S. Coffey of Mechanicsville; loving sister, Dara; paternal grandmother, Charlotte H. Coffey; maternal grandparents, Chester and Evelyn Sheffer; uncle, Neil Coffey; aunts, Beth Waddell and Faith Boyle; and many friends. Services were held Saturday, Mar. 8, 2008 at Faith Landmark Ministries, 8491 Chamberlayne Ave. Memorials may be made to your local animal humane society.
Gary Cubbage, of Mechanicsville, departed this earth Feb. 26, 2008. He leaves behind his loving wife, Gail; and daughters, Heidi Miller of York, Pa., Holly Cubbage of Littlestown, Pa., Monte Wooldridge of Panama City, Fla., Alisha Powers and husband, Mark, of Gainesville, Va.; grandchildren, Jimmy and Samantha Garner, and Rhiannon Humphrey; sisters, Edie Thomas and husband, Bill, Linda Smith and husband, Joe; brothers, Doug and Bunky Cubbage; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Garland Cubbage Sr.; and his sister, Alice “Babe” Kontz. The family received friends Friday, Feb. 29, 2008 at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville, and where funeral services were held Saturday Mar. 1, 2008. Graveside services were held at Washington Memorial Park. Rev. Annette Carper officiated. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the American Heart Association or the National Kidney Foundation.
Larry Victor Gordon, 49, of Mechanicsville, passed away Thursday, Mar. 6, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Gordon; daughter, Lauren Victoria Gordon; three sons, Layne Wilson, Lance Ryan and Lathan Thomas Gordon; father, Jim Gordon of Tallahassee, Fla.; sister, Mary Nelams of Madison, Ga.; devoted in-laws, Sharden and Linda Schwamp and a special friend, Mr. B. Larry was a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church, Washington & Henry Masonic Lodge #344 AF & AM, American Legion Post #175 and Richmond East Moose Lodge. The family received friends Sunday, Mar. 9, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. A memorial service was held Monday, Mar. 10, 2008 at Cool Spring Baptist Church, 9283 Atlee Station Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. 23116. Graveside services private. Teresa Holzbach Hutcherson, 49, of Mechanicsville, passed away Mar. 6, 2008, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was preceded in death by her father, Benjamin Bismarck Holzbach Sr.; brother, Benjamin Bismarck Holzbach Jr.; maternal grandparents, Russell Floyd and Mattie Loving Whitlock Sr.; and paternal grandparents, Clarence A. and Dora W. Holzbach. She is survived by her husband, John L. Hutcherson; loving mother, Dorothy Whitlock Holzbach; sister, Darlene Holzbach Davis; two devoted daughters, Jessica Winter Mitchell and husband, Robbie, LeeAnn Winter Walpole and husband, Jesse; two beautiful granddaughters, Haileigh Kay Mitchell and Reagan Lynn Walpole; two very special stepdaughters, Robin Hutcherson Gilbert and husband, Chris, Renee Hutcherson Cox and husband, L.G.; three step-grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Samantha, Gilbert, and Jackson; two loving aunts, Betty Ann Poore and Verna Mae Crowder; and a loving sister-in-law, Beryl Feldman Holzbach. She is also survived by three nieces, Kristina Hunsinger, Alison Davis, and Diana Davis. Charles Wesley Melton, 78, of Richmond, passed away Sunday, Mar. 2, 2008. Charlie is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen Thomas Melton; one son, Doug Melton of Glen Allen; two daughters, Debra Willis of Floyd, Va. and Diane Foran of Easton, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Chad, Jeb, Erin, and Cally Melton, and Amber Colson. Charlie served in the U.S. Navy and was a graduate of UVA in mechanical engineering. He had a number of jobs in his engineering career and retired from the Virginia State Transportation Dept. He was a past president of Mechanicsville Little League, a member of Washington & Henry Masonic Lodge No. 344 AF&AM, as well as a member of Jesters Court No. 16 and Greeters Unit of ACCA Temple. The family received friends Tuesday, Mar. 4, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home, and where a Masonic Memorial service was held Tuesday, Mar. 4, 2008. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Mar. 5, at the funeral home, with graveside services following in Washington Memorial Park, Sandston, Va. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to the Mechanicsville Little League or the ACCA Temple. Mark R. Oliver, of Aylett, departed this life after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on Sunday, Mar. 2, 2008. Our sorrow will be turned into joy because we will see him again, as he had a clear profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert. He leaves behind his wife, Beth; and daughters, Anna and Mary; his mother, Margot; sisters, Esther and Petra; and brother, Johnathan. The family received friends Tuesday, Mar. 4, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where services were held Wednesday, Mar. 5, 2008. Margaret F. Pilkington “Mutt”, 83, of Mechanicsville, widow of Raymond A. “Pinky” Pilkington Sr., passed away Wednesday, Mar. 5, 2008. She is survived by a daughter, Jackie Goldburg and husband, Richard; a son, Raymond A. Pilkington Jr. and wife, Cindy; four grandchildren, Michael Goldburg, Meredith Goldburg-Saxe, Julia Goldburg, Nancy Goldburg-Williams; also several nephews. Mrs. Pilkington was a retired employee of Reynolds Metal Company, a member of Mechanicsville Presbyterian Church, passed Matron of Mechanicsville Chapter #138 OES and honorable Mayor of Little Florida, Farnham, Va. The family received friends Friday, Mar. 7, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where funeral services were held Saturday, Mar. 8, 2008. Graveside services were held at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Mechanicsville Presbyterian Church.
Carole Baughan Vance, 59, of Richmond, died Tuesday, Mar. 4, 2008. Surviving are her daughter, Jennifer Carole Vance; one grandson, Matthew Dylan Crew; and a brother, Craig Baughan, all of Richmond. She had taught in Henrico County Schools. The family received friends Monday, Mar. 10, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Graveside services were held Monday Mar. 10, 2008 in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association, P.O.
