Joseph J. Andrus, 91, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on July 28, 2008. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He retired from the U.S. Post Office as maintenance superintendent for the Richmond District, and was an active member of the Poplar Springs Baptist Church for 58 years. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas M. Andrus. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Victoria Andrus; daughter, Vickie A. Hines and her husband, Tom; granddaughters, Melissa C. Hines, M. Allison Hines, Jennifer A. Congleton and her husband, Greg, Tracy V. Andrus; great-grandson, Greg Congleton Jr.; and a devoted friend, Barbara Hines. Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 1, 2008 at Poplar Springs Baptist Church. Graveside services followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends Friday, Aug. 1, 2008 until service time, at the church. Nancy Swane Cobb, 71, of Mechanicsville, passed away July 31, 2008. She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Sinclair-Smith, father, Fred William Swane, and her brother, Bruce Swane. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Donald Joe Cobb, two sons, Freddy and his wife Amy, and Kevin and his wife Kem, six grandchildren, Jordan, Andrew, Grayson, Tyler, Lindsay, and Casey, and her kitty cat Toshiba Joe. Nancy began working for the FBI at age 16, and graduated from Orange County High School. She worked diligently at organizing her high school class reunions, and was a member of the Tidewater Crabs Motor home Club along with her husband. Nancy loved and raised kitty cats, and absolutely adored her two sons. The family received friends for a celebration of life on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, at the home of Freddy and Amy Cobb. Warren Jeffrey Edwards, 51, of Sandston, lost his battle with melanoma on Thursday, July 24, 2008. Jeff was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce B. Morrison. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Joy D. Edwards; son, John W. Smith and his wife, Jodi; grandson, Brodie D. Smith; father, Lee O. Edwards and wife, Peggy; three brothers, Michael D. Edwards and wife, Sabrina, Patrick Edwards and wife, Yvonne, and Daniel Edwards and wife, Gail; and numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, and other extended family and friends. Jeff was a very kind, loving, caring and compassionate person who will be missed by all. The family received friends Saturday, July 26, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where funeral services were held Sunday, July 27, 2008 with graveside services following in Gethsemane Church of Christ Cemetery. Rebecca L. Flippo, of Mechanicsville, passed away July 29, 2008. She was recently predeceased by her grandmother, Lillian Slater (Little Nannie). She is survived by her two children, Marshall and Erin McDaniel; her parents, Harold and Betty Flippo; brothers, Bobby and Scott Flippo and wife, Kellie; sisters, Rosie Compton and Margie Pearson. Also survived by her godparents, Lonnie and Earlene Tuck; and former in-laws, the McDaniel family. Rebecca was a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church. The family received friend at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville, on Friday, Aug. 1, 2008 and where funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008. Graveside services were held at Signal Hill Memorial Park.
Ida T. Getz, age 101, of Highland Springs, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 30, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, James P. Getz; and her daughter, Frances Gonsalves. She is survived by her children and their spouses, James R. Sr. and Margaret F. Getz, Donald S. and Nellie Getz, Martin E. Sr. and Virginia Getz, Jo Ann and Burley “ Buddy” Darlington; 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Getz was the oldest parishioner at St. John’s Catholic Church. The family received friends Thursday, July 31, 2008 and Friday, August 1, 2008 at Bliley’s-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where a Rosary service was also held Friday, August 1, 2008. Mass of the Resurrection was held on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Highland Springs. Graveside services were held in Washington Memorial Park.
Everett Ray Jones, 57, of Sandston, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on July 25, 2008. He was an employee of Philip Morris for 29½years. His passion was working with the band Flashback. He is survived by a sister, Betty Gusti Bader; a brother, Jerry Jones and his wife, Sandra; nieces and nephews, Shawn Gusti and wife, Cathy, Amanda Bales, Jackie Bader and Whitney Jones; two great-nieces, Suzie and Kayleigh; two great-nephews, Sage and Darin; his aunts, Elsie Shinault and Shirley Dickman; and other relatives and friends. The family received friends Sunday, July 27, 2008 the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where services were held Monday, July 28, 2008. Graveside services were held in Washington Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Leland DeLoss Short, 79, of Hampton, Va., formerly of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 25, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores E. Short; daughter, Patricia E. Short; and grand-daughter, Jolyn Wehrmeister. He is survived by four daughters, Linda and Stuart Garrett, Deborah and Jim Jones, Sharon and David Jones, and Cindy and Steve Miller; two others who were just like daughters, Christina Novak and Evelyn Thurston; sister, Virginia Lewis and husband, Bud; brother, Floyd Short; his grandchildren, Mikel DeSilvis, Shari and Bobby Wallace, Bob Wehrmeister, and E.L. and Christie Jones; great-grandchildren, Kayla and Lori Wehrmeister, Lucas “Luke” and Daniel Wallace. He is also survived by many church family, loved ones, and friends. Leland was a devoted husband, father, and a minister of the Church of Christ for 59 years. He served eight different congregations, touching many lives and leading many people to Christ. He was also responsible for leading many young men into the ministry. The family received friends Sunday July 27, and Monday July 28, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, and where a funeral service was held Tuesday, July 29, 2008. William B. “Bill” Tatum Jr., 66, of Hanover, Virginia, surrendered his life to God on Friday, July 25, 2008. He was a devoted husband, father and friend. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Ancarrow Tatum; son, William B. “Chip” Tatum III and wife, Anita; daughter, Sharon Tatum Slate and husband, Thomas; four grandchildren, Jonathan Tatum, Paige Tatum, Joshua Slate, Brayden Slate; one great-granddaughter, Brianna Tatum; two sisters, Roseann Hester and husband, George, Linda Wade and husband, Ralph; nephews and nieces, David, Ricky, Susan and Dayna. He was an avid boater and active in the Richmond Power Squadron and the Virginia Yacht Club. He was pit crew chief for #26 Tatum Racing with VMS. He will be forever loved and missed. The family received friends Sunday, July 27, 2008 and Monday, July 28, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., and where funeral services were held Tuesday, July 29, 2008. Megan Michele Fischer Trahan, 27, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 25, 2008. She is survived by her husband, Christopher W. Trahan, age 32; a daughter, Kara Rain Ferrell, age 6; her mother, Margaret A. Foster and stepfather, Gary; her father, Larry D. Fischer and stepmother, Jackie; her mother-in-law, Betty R. Trahan, and father-in-law, the late P. Eugene Trahan Jr.; her siblings, M. Andrew Fischer; and significant other, Ashley Hatley, Artie Noel and wife, Valerie, her sister, Stacey Peck; stepbrothers, Jim Foster and Gerald Lipchak; stepsister, Allyson Lipchak; grandmother, beloved Granny Louise Flournoy, and her GiGi and Swifty; sister-in-law, Heather Bradshaw; special friends, Dan and Michelle Ferrell; numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.
