Charles Herschel Allen Jr., 79, of Deltaville, a U.S. Navy veteran and retired electrical contractor, entered eternal rest Friday, Aug. 6, 2010 while surrounded by his family. Charles is survived by his loving wife, Jean, of 37 years; son, Rick Hayward and his wife, Laura; daughters, Robin Gibson and husband, Wayne, Tracy Daino and husband, Dean; grandchildren, Brandon, Andrew, Courtney, Alexis, Austin, Joshua and Jacob; and children by a former marriage, Michael and Diane Allen; sister, Catherine Grey and husband, Jimmy; brother, James “Butch” Allen and wife, Hazel. The family received friends Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 9, 2010. Howard S. Chandler, “Sammy”, age 63, of Mechanicsville, passed away Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby and Howard S. Chandler Sr., and sister, Pat Willis. He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Robin Chandler; daughter, Tracy Baker; son, Travis Chandler; two granddaughters, Rebecca and Kayla; and several nieces and nephews and many devoted friends. He was retired from Bell Atlantic and Quality Communications of Virginia. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a proud member of Old Church Hunt Club. Louise Wilkinson Cosby, 88, of Mechanicsville, died Aug. 5, 2010. She is survived by her husband of almost 70 years, Dudley E. “Doodle” Cosby, Sr.; two daughters, Grace (Norman) Puryear, and Melody (Skip) Smith; one son, Bubba (Fiancee Paula and her son Colton); two grandchildren, Cory (Beverly) Payne and Tina Puryear; and two great grandchildren, Kendall and Jonathan Payne. Jesse Albert Crews, 86, of Mechanicsville, died Aug. 8, 2010. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Sarah Wood Crews; daughter, Kathleen M. Medwid and husband, Steve; grandchildren, Kathleen Medwid, Nick Medwid and wife, Kathy, Alex Medwid; and great-granddaughter, Peyton Medwid; three brothers, Eugene W. Crews and wife, Grace H. Crews, of Richmond, Va., Cabell L. Crews and wife, Margaret E. Crews, of Lynchburg, Va. and James Dabney Crews Sr. and wife, June B. Crews, of Buckingham, Va.; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Harry A. and Bessie S. Crews of Buckingham, Va.; his sister, Christine C. Eades of Richmond, Va.; and his brother, Houston H. Crews of Buckingham, Va. Mr. Crews was born in Buckingham, Va. and served in World War II in Europe in the 82nd Airborne Division and was later called back to active duty in the Korean War, where he served in the 780th Field Artillery. After serving his country in the U.S. Military, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), where he obtained both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Agriculture. He worked until retirement at the Virginia State Federal Surplus Property Agency. He was a longtime, active member of Mulberry Grove Baptist Church in Buckingham, Va., where he served as a Deacon and held many other church offices. He was a member and past master of Buckingham Masonic Lodge #242 A.F. & A.M. He was also a member of the Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies and the ACCA Temple Shrine, where he was in the ACCA Chanters. He served as a volunteer barber at the Masonic Homes of Virginia in Richmond, Va. Family received visitors on Monday, Aug. 9, 2010 at Dunkum Funeral Home in Dillwyn, Va. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010 at Mulberry Grove Baptist Church in Buckingham, Va. Graveside services with Masonic graveside rites immediately followed in church cemetery.
Thomas L. Eubank, 62, of Aylett, has gone to rest on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010. His life’s passion was farming and being the owner of Tommy’s Produce in King William County. He was also a retired City of Richmond fireman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sewell and Elizabeth R. Eubank. Judith N. Hayes, 69, of Glen Allen, passed away on Monday, Aug. 2, 2010. She was preceded in death by her son, Maynard H. Dalton Jr. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, James A. Hayes; three daughters, Cheryl S. Chandler (David), Karen M. Parsons (Byron), and Angie Sears (Jeff); and eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Cathy Hall Heath, 56, of Mechanicsville, joined the angels on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010. She was the daughter of the late Giles Henry and Dorothy Jones Hall. She is survived by a devoted partner, Joe Gilbert; a daughter, Stephanie Lewter (Greg); grandchildren, Brittany and Kyle Lewter; sister, Pat Ring (Jim); niece, Tracy Berry (Alex); nephew, Giles Ring; and numerous devoted loved ones and friends. Albert L. Hobbs Jr., “Zeke”, age 80, of Mechanicsville, peacefully passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2010. He is survived by Nancy, his wife of 53 years. Also left to cherish his memory are his children and their spouses, Becky Shermer (Sam), Betsy Hannon (Bob) and Davey Hobbs (Teresa); and four grandchildren, Heather and Robbie Hannon, Sydney and Chloe Shermer, all of Mechanicsville. Zeke graduated from John Marshall High School in 1946, and was Captain of “C” Company in the school’s Corps of Cadets. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1950. He was employed as an accountant in the insurance industry for over 45 years. He began his career with the State of Virginia, moved on to positions with Richmond Life, Fidelity Corp., First Commonwealth Corp., and retired from the Reciprocal Group in 2003. Zeke was an active Freemason, and was a Past Master of Washington and Henry Lodge #344 AF and AM, as well as a Past District Deputy Grand Master for the State of Virginia. He earned the 33rd Degree and was a Past Venerable Master of the Richmond Scottish Rite. A passion of Zeke’s was serving on the Hanover County Planning Commission, where he was the Mechanicsville District’s representative for 20 years. Hanover County benefited greatly from his stewardship and dedication in this role. His family is so very grateful for his love and selfless giving. Herman L. Leslie Jr. , 85, of Ashland, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010. He was preceded in death by a son, Alan D. Leslie; two brothers, Roy and Ben Leslie; and a sister, Dorothy Zicafoose. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Louise M. Leslie; two sons, Edward (Lynda) and Frank (Stephannie) Leslie; two daughters, Rebecca Reel (Junior) and Katherine Martin; and one sister, Mary Penny (John); also five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Joseph Kaye Melton, 73, of Mechanicsville, passed away Aug. 4, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Melton Sr.; brothers, Dallas Melton Jr. and Ray Melton; and a grandson, Joseph Zachary Sharpe. He was a retired City of Richmond street maintenance inspector, as well as a retiree of Southern States Grain Mill. He was extremely proud and felt honored to have served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a former Hanover Ruritan member. He served his Lord as a dedicated member of Gethsemane Church of Christ, especially cooking for their many events. He is survived by the love of his life for 50 years, Patricia Wells Melton; his beloved three girls, Sherry Farrar (Cary), Chris Hedgepeth and Tina Sharpe (Jeff); as well as his grandchildren, who were the true joys of his life, Jamie (fiancé‚, Greg Brown), G.C. Farrar IV and Victoria Sharpe. He also is survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, whom he loved as his own, Dr. Richard and Faye Wilfong, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wood and Mrs. Lee Melton. He considered himself truly blessed to have the love of several nieces and nephews. Anyone who ever met Joe knew they had a friend for life. He will be remembered for his willingness to help anyone and the great love he had for his Lord. Joe was a dedicated husband and father who will be missed by all. Gladys F. Overbey, 88, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, triumphantly crossed over to heaven on Aug. 7, 2010. Her family and friends are praising God for her life and are rejoicing in the knowledge she is wrapped tightly in the loving arms of Jesus. Gladys was a born September 4, 1921 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Fleet of Stevensville. She was a longtime member of New Hanover Church. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Archibald Fleet, Ben Fleet, Earnest Fleet, and Garnett Fleet, and one sister, Mary Hundley. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Bill; two brothers, Jimmy Fleet and Charles Fleet; four children, Martha Janney of Culpeper, Anne Crim of Hahira, Ga., Jane Rouston of Fredericksburg, and William “Buck” Overbey Jr. of Yorktown; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her life’s greatest accomplishment was not measured in the number of years, but the Godly example shown by her love, humility, and quiet strength touching the lives of all who knew and loved her. Arnold J. Overby, 59, of Hanover County, died Aug. 3, 2010. He is survived by his loving wife, Anne F. Overby; sons, Christopher and Geoffrey Overby; brothers, Lowen and Stanley Overby; stepdaughter, Catherine Smith and her husband, Shane; stepson, Michael Ferrier and his wife, Jan; and granddaughters, Catherine and Samantha Smith. Barbara Sage, Tina, 85, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 7, 2010. Born in Italy, she came to the U.S. following WWII with her husband, Arthur L. Sage, who preceded her in death. She was a loving mother and Nonna. She is survived by her children, Jeanette Christiana, Arthur C. Sage, Maria Barbour, John Sage, and Tina Lucas, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Stuart M. Waters, died Aug. 7, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Leigh Finn Waters; his daughters, Theresa Waters Humphrey and husband, Samuel, and Debbie Waters Anderson and husband, Wil; grandchildren, Kyle Stuart, Brandon, and Lindsey; one sister, Marvis Thompson; and two brothers, T. Ellwood and Kenneth. Mr. Waters was preceded in death by a brother, John W. Jr. Mr. Waters was a past president of the I.B.E.W. Local 1064, a member and former deacon of the Glen Allen Baptist Church, where he was chairman of several committees, a member of the Conservation Park of Virginia, the Horseshoe Gun Club, Quail Unlimited, ACCA Temple Legion of Honor, and the Glen Allen Lodge No. 131. Douglas Wayne Webster, 63, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010. He was preceded in death by his father, Harvey Webster. He is survived by his mother, Flora Webster; son, Brian Webster; daughter, Angie Webster Smith (Jeff); grandchildren, Justis and Wesley Smith; his best friend, Jim Sheffield; brother, Preston “Ebbie” Webster (Brenda); sister, Diane W. VanZile (Jeff); sister, Barbara W. Campbell (Mike); brother, Mel Webster (Ruthie); numerous nieces and nephews. He served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Borie (DD-704). He loved and owned classic hot rod and muscle cars. He had a “need for speed.” He loved his Harley Davidson Road King, especially when he cranked the throttle to 120 mph on 295. He loved his children, grandchildren, family and his devoted best friend, Jim Sheffield. He lived life to the fullest, made friends everywhere he went and was loved by all.
