Carrie Carr Almond, age 90, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 6, 2008 at 10:10 p.m. She was born in Spotsylvania County on Dec. 25, 1917. Mrs. Almond resided in Glen Allen, Va., with her daughter, Marrian, for the past nine years. She was a member of Craigs Baptist Church in Spotsylvania, Va. She also attended Mechanicsville Baptist Church in Mechanicsville, Va. Mrs. Almond was preceded in death by her husband, E. Clifton Almond; her mother, Mamie Gallahan Carter; her brothers, Berkley and Daniel Carr. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elmora Golightly and husband, Bob, and Mrs. Marrian Mills and husband, Lionel; additional survivors include six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. The family received friends Friday, Aug. 8, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008 at Mechanicsville Baptist Church. Graveside services followed in Craigs Baptist Church Cemetery, Spotsylvania County. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Virginia.

Gordon Earl Barwick Sr., 79, of Mechanicsville, passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2008. He was preceded in death by many family members. He was a retired member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary after many years, and was Past Commander of Flotilla 34. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Shirley K. Barwick; son, G. Earl Barwick Jr. and beloved partner as well as cherished family member, Tracey Hitzler; sisters, Maude Griffey of Richmond and Alice Fioramonti of Annapolis, Md.; his beloved animals, a pony named Midnight; dogs, Misty, Casper and Fancy; his “grand-animals,” dogs, Zildjian, Samantha, Bailey; as well as a cat named Buster; as well as many other family and friends. The family received friends Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Bennett Funeral Home, Mechanicsville Chapel, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, Mechanicsville, and where funeral services were held Friday, Aug 1, 2008.  Graveside services were held at Westhampton Memorial Park.

Bette J. Harmon, 57, of Mechanicsville, passed from this life on Aug. 4, 2008. She was the daughter of Charles Bennett Harmon and Marian Lowry Harmon. She was born on Dec. 20, 1950 in Richmond and grew up in Henrico County. Ms. Harmon was a graduate of Mary Washington College and earned a Master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. She taught English at Lee-Davis High School for many years and later, was a librarian at Atlee High School from which she retired. Ms. Harmon was an avid traveler and book reader. She was a lifelong member of Fairmount Memorial Baptist Church. She is survived by her parents, Charles B. and Marian L. Harmon of Richmond; two brothers, W. Barry Harmon and his wife, Linda, of Richmond and C. Rady Harmon of Mechanicsville; one sister, Janet H. Dunnevant of Mechanicsville; seven nieces and one nephew, two great-nieces and three great-nephews; and a special friend, Paul Sciantarelli. The family received friends on Thursday and Friday Aug. 7 and Aug. 8, 2008 at Bennett Funeral Home, Mechanicsville Chapel, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. A funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008 at Fairmount Memorial Baptist Church, 4205 Ravenswood Rd., Richmond, Va. Graveside services followed at Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Welford Allen Loving Jr., 42, of King William, Va., found peace on Monday, Aug. 4, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Jill Loving; daughter, Amanda Loving; son, Chase Loving and stepdaughter, Lindsay Rattelsdorfer; his parents, Welford and Vicki Loving; grandmother, Shirley Frame; his aunt, Frances Cameron; and uncles, Wilbur Loving, Linwood Loving, and Elber and Linda Frame; his former wife, Monica Loving; also a host of aunts, uncles, family members and friends. His love of life was coming home to his family, fishing and working with his dad. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. The family received friends Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. A celebration of his life was held Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008 at the funeral home. Graveside services followed at the Signal Hill Memorial Park.

James Kermit Mahone “Abe,” 68, of Mechanicsville, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2008. He was born April 16, 1940 in Wythe County, son of the late James and Gladys Anderson Mahone. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Mahone; and a sister, Opal Webb. Mr. Mahone was a U.S. Army veteran and retired owner of Mahone Pest Elimination Company, Richmond, Va. He is survived by his wife, Judy R. Mahone of the home; one son, James “Jay” Mahone of Richmond, Va.; one sister and brother-in-law, Frankie and Edd Pike; two brothers and sister-in-law, Fred Mahone, Frank and Bonnie Mahone; and sister-in-law, Helen Mahone, all of Barren Springs, Va. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 26, 2008 at Glenwood United Methodist Church, Rev. Bryan Wyke officiated. Graveside services followed in Rankin Family Cemetery. Grover King Post #1115, VFW will conduct graveside military rites. The family received friends Friday, July 25, 2008. Reese Funeral Home, Austinville, Va., was in charge of arrangements.

Matthew Wayne Naumann, 22, of Quinton, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008. He was the loving son of Debbie and Donald Naumann, and devoted brother of Melisa Naumann. He is also survived by his maternal grandmother, Audrey Acree, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. He was a 2004-graduate of Lee-Davis High School and a 2008-graduate of Christopher Newport University. The family received friends 6 Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where services were held Friday, Aug. 8, 2008. Graveside services followed in Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jackson Johnson Taylor, 89, of Mechanicsville, died Thursday, July 31, 2008. Born at “Shrub Hill,” his family’s farm in Winnabow, N.C., on Nov. 20, 1918, he was the son of Edwin Wellington Taylor and Alice Jackson Johnson Taylor. He received his B.S. degree in physics from the University of Richmond in 1942. During WWII, he served aboard the “Duxbury Bay” as Lieutenant JG, USNR, Fleet Air Wing One, receiving two Battle Stars in the Okinawa campaign. In 1948, he completed his M.S. degree at Cornell University and began his 38-year career as professor of physics at the University of Richmond, serving as chairman of the physics department for 21 years. Admired by hundreds of students as an inspired and outstanding teacher, he was named a UR Distinguished Educator in 1976. Professor Taylor was a member of the Va. Academy of Science (President and Fellow), the American Association of Physics Teachers (Chairman, Va. Area, President Chesapeake Section, National Council Representative), Sigma Pi Sigma (physics), Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership) and Phi Gamma Delta. A lifelong Presbyterian, Mr. Taylor served as Elder and Clerk of Session at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church, as Elder at Bon Air Presbyterian Church, as president of the Richmond Area Council of Presbyterian Churches and on various presbytery and synod committees. Most recently, he was a member of Fairfield Presbyterian Church. Since 2002, Mr. Taylor was an active member of the Covenant Woods community in Mechanicsville, serving on committees and using his passion for photography to enrich the lives of C.W. residents. He was an award-winning member of the Lee Artists Association. Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Beaman Taylor; daughters, Ellen T. Sisson of New Canaan, Conn., Frances T. Anton (James) of Durham, N.C., Nancy T. Bodge (Kevin) of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; stepson, Thomas C. Hesch (Susan) of Richmond; grandchildren, Jack, Mary and Frances Sisson, John and Peter Anton, Charlie, Edwin and Alice Bodge and Phoebe, Greyson and Zander Hesch; sister, Helen Taylor of Winnabow, N.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Ellen Trimmer Taylor; his sister, Julia White; and his brothers, Edwin and Charles Taylor. A memorial service was held at Fairfield Presbyterian Church, 6930 Cold Harbor Road, Mechanicsville, on Monday, Aug. 4, 2008. The family received friends at Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, Mechanicsville, on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Covenant Woods Fund, 7090 Covenant Woods Dr., Mechanicsville, Va. 23111.

Thomas Alvin Taylor, 73, of Mechanicsville, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008. Surviving are his wife, Ruby F. Taylor; daughter, Rebecca Taylor; grand-daughter, Ashley; brother, Harry; sisters, Judy, Lillie and Florine; and many nieces and nephews. The family received friends Thursday Aug. 7, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Graveside services were held Friday, Aug. 8, 2008 at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia.
