Lewis Latane Brizendine, 96, of Mechanicsville, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Nellie Elgin Brizendine; two sons, Lee Roy and wife, Grace, of Little Plymouth, Va., and Robert L. of Dunns Loring, Va.; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Ray of Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church. The family received friends Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, where a funeral service was held Monday, Sept. 8, 2008. Graveside services were held in Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Ray of Hope Pentecostal Church Building Fund, 3105 Chatham Road, Richmond, Virginia 23227.

Harry Osborne Bullock, 86, of Covenant Woods Retirement Center, Mechanicsville, Va., passed away on Sept. 8, 2008.  His first wife of 52 years Evelyn Martin Bullock; his brothers Tate M. Bullock, John A. Bullock, Thomas W. Bullock and sister Jannie Barlow preceded him in death.  He is survived by his daughter Joyce Bullock Davis, her husband James, and beloved grandson J.D.; his wife of seven years Dorothy Street Bullock, her daughter Faye Allam and husband Bob; grandsons Robert, Brian, Scott and their families; his brother David Bullock, sisters Edith Barry Sizer, Avis Echo, and an exended family of loving nieces, nephews, and friends.  Harry was an active member of the Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist Church and Men’s League.  He was a past president of the Sparklers Club, and has served on the board of directors with his beloved 11th Armored Division of the 56th Engineers-European Theater WWII.  He retired after 46 years of service to Southern States Cooperative.  He will be remembered by his golfing foursome, pool partners and loving neighbors at Covenant Woods for his humor and zest for life.  The family received friends on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008 and Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008 at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, Rt. 301 & Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville, Va. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 at Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist Church, 6100 Chamberlayne Road, Richmond, Va. 23227. Memorial contributions may be made to Chamberlayne Heights United Methodist Church or Bon Secours Hospice, 5875 Bremo Road, Suite 710, Richmond, Va. 23226. Interment Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, Aylett, Va.

Bernice H. Carr, 91, of Mechanicsville, passed away Aug. 29, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick C. (Pat) Carr Jr. and a son, Frederick C. Carr, III. She is survived by her sons Davis H. Carr (Martha) of Nashville, Tenn., Thomas H. Carr (Jean) of Hanover, and daughter Bonnie Garrett (Richard) of Mechanicsville. There are 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren to carry on her memory. Also surviving are her sisters, Flora Riddick and Jane Waits of Richmond and Tim Haden of Elkton, Va. She was a long time member of Battery Park Christian Church and a member of the Hanover Home Demonstration Club. Memorial contributions may be made to Battery Park Christian Church, Reconstruction Fund, 4201 Brook Road, Richmond, Va. 23227.

Horace Hall Hastings, 87, of Mechanicsville. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, George W. and Julia Banks Hall Hastings; two brothers, James Maston and G. Perkins Hastings; two sisters, Mildred Hastings Overton and Estelle Hastings Daniel; and his wife of 60 years, Earle King Hastings. Mr Hastings is survived by his daughter, Bliss Hastings Bourne and her husband, Douglas N. Bourne, of Fredericksburg, Va.; his son, Earl Hall Hastings and his wife, June Pickett Hastings; one grandson, Michael Lewis Hastings of Richmond; his devoted niece, Barbara Jean Wheat of Mechanicsville; and by many loving friends and other family members. Mr. Hastings was a 1939 graduate of Danieltown High School in Brunswick, Va. He served in the Army during WWII and was awarded the Bronze Star for his action in the European Theater. He was a longtime employee of Philip Morris Tobacco Company and served as an officer in the United Tobacco Workers Local. Mr. Hastings was a member of the Washington-Henry Masonic Lodge as well as the Moose Club. He and his family were members of Cool Spring Baptist Church. The family received visitors Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at the Mechaniscville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where a funeral service was held Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008. Interment at Signal Hill Memorial Park, Hanover, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Hastings’s memory to Ashcake Volunteer Rescue Squad, 8375 New Ashcake Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. 23116.
Thomas Louis Higgins Sr., 49, of Highland Springs, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Higgins; and brother, John Higgins Jr. He left behind his wife of 27 years, Tammy Higgins; daughters, Teresa Gary and Lisa Higgins; son, Thomas Louis Higgins Jr.; three grandchildren, Skye, Rylee and Kamryn; and one sister, Sheila Marciniak. He will also be greatly missed by his loyal companions, Emily and Sunday. The family received friends Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road. Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 5, 2008 at Hopewell Baptist Church, New Kent County, with graveside services being held in the church cemetery.

Marie Griggs Talley, 91, of Mechanicsville, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008. She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel H. Talley Jr. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Daniel H. Talley Sr.; son, Thomas S. Talley and wife, Cheryl; daughter, Joan Talley Badalamenti and husband, Tony; grandchildren, Jason, Ryan and Danielle Talley and Joseph Badalamenti, all of Mechanicsville. Marie was active in church and community services. The family received friends at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., Friday, Sept. 5, 2008. Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at Gethsemane Church of Christ. Graveside services were held in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Oak Hill Christian Camp or Gethsemane Church of Christ.
