Lois M. Goin Atwell, 95, of Mechanicsville, departed this life November 10, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Atwell.  She is survived by her two sisters, Elsie Brown and Katherine Apperson, both of Mechanicsville; her nieces; Norma Brown Church and Sue Apperson Rohrbach; nephew, Gayle Apperson Sr.; and a host of other nieces, nephews, and friends. Lois was a very active member of Mechanicsville United Methodist Church. She was a president of the Francis Allen Circle, and she served on numerous committees. She was President of the Eagle Club for many years, loved her yard, and was a wonderful cook who enjoyed her life. The family would like to thank the Heritage Green of Mechanicsville and the Odyssey Hospice Care for the loving care that Lois received while she was there. The family received friends November 13, 2007 at the Atlee Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, Rte. 301 & Shady Grove Rd. Funeral services were held at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 14, 2007. Graveside services were held at Signal Hill Memorial Park.

Charles “Gillis” Maxwell, of Mechanicsville, died suddenly November 16, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Diane (Sharp); daughters, Rebecca Stark (Stephan) and Mary Maxwell; brother, Norman; two sisters, Patty McGee and Verna Lea Wilhelm; two granddaughters, Jazmine Gathers and Mina Stark; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. The family received friends Monday, November 19 at the Catholic Church of the Redeemer, 8275 Meadowbridge Rd., Mechanicsville, Va., while a Christian Wake service to followed. A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated Tuesday at the church with graveside services to follow at Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Association for the Support of Children with Cancer, P.O. Box 980121, Richmond, Va. 23298-0121. Mechanicsville Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home, is in charge of arrangements.

Shawn Kelly Nyholm, 41, of Mechanicsville, after a courageous three year battle with cancer, went to be with the Lord on November 12, 2007.  He is survived by his parents David A. and June A. Nyholm, sister; Lisa Boll and her husband Kevin Boll, nephew; Trey, niece; Gracie, and special friends; Bobbie Jo and Julie.  Shawn served in the United States Army, attached to 101st Abn Div (AASLT).  The family received friends on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, Rt. 301 & Shady Grove Rd. Graveside services private.  In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to, Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center, P.O. Box 980214, Richmond, Virginia 23298-0214.

Arvel A. “Pop” Phifer, 96, formerly of Warsaw, left this life on November 13, 2007. Born in Lexington, N.C. August 1, 1911, he was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Elizabeth Quinn Phifer; a granddaughter, Linda D. Johnson and his son-in-law, Robert L. Dern. Pop is survived by his daughter, Ann P. Dern; his son, John C. Phifer Sr. and his wife, Bess; four grandchildren, Lois Conn, Jane Dern, John C. Phifer Jr. and his wife, Janet, and Gayla P. Stout and her husband, Gordon; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Pop proudly served on the Battleship U.S.S. Wisconsin during World War II and was a life member of the American Legion. He was a long time member of Tappahannock Memorial United Methodist Church. Funeral services were held Thursday November 15, 2007 in Woody Funeral Home, Route 301 and Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville. Graveside services followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family received friends Wednesday November 14, 2007 in a celebration of his life. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Boys State Program.

R. Thomas Tyler Jr., 87, passed away Tuesday, November 13, 2007. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Margaret B. Tyler and is survived by one daughter, Diane T. Ware and husband, Bill, of Mechanicsville; one son, Stuart Tyler and his wife, Claudia, of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, J. Judson Tyler and his wife, Inez; as well as several nieces and nephews. Mr. Tyler was a member of the Mechanicsville Church of Christ and a retiree of C&O Railroad. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where family received friends Sunday, and where services were held Monday, November 19, 2007. Graveside services held at Gethsemane Church of Christ Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the R.T. Tyler Scholarship Fund c/o Johnson Bible College, 7900 Johnson Dr., Knoxville, Tenn. 37998.
