John G. “Jack” Bruce Jr. ,71, of Mechanicsville, owner of Bruce Auto Parts, passed away November 30, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Valecia M. Bruce; his children, Mark Bruce and wife, Lindy, Melanie White and husband, Sam, Scott Bruce, and Jennifer Adkins and husband, Rodney; nine grandchildren, Scott Aaron, Brittany, Logan, Chasity, Megan, Hunter, Afton, Brooklyn and Tabitha; two sisters, Beatrice Crantz and Marjorie Phillips and husband, Gerald. The family received friends Wednesday December 5, 2007 and Thursday December 6, 2007 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Funeral services were held Friday, December 7, 2007 at Black Creek Baptist Church, 6289 McClellan Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. 23111. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Building Fund of Black Creek Baptist Church.
Samuel Lawrence Carter Sr., 84, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 5, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of 59 years; daughter, Peggy Robinson and husband, Mike; two sons, Larry Carter and wife, Amy, and David Carter and wife, Tanya; six grandchildren, Chris and Eric Robinson and Adam, Brittany, Zachary and Joshua Carter; brother, Robert Carter; sister, Helen Lampkin; as well as several nieces and nephews. Sam was an avid gardener and a faithful member of Cool Spring Baptist Church, where he served as an usher. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed by all. The family received friends Saturday, December 8, 2007 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road. Funeral services were held Sunday, December 9, 2007 at Cool Spring Baptist Church. Graveside services were held at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cool Spring Baptist Church Children’s Building Fund, 9283 Atlee Station Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. 23116.
Leamon Thomas Clayton Jr. “LT”, 81, of 7112 Fishing Circle, Mechanicsville, Va., died Thursday, November 22, 2007 at Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville, Va. Mr. Clayton was a native of Guilford County, N.C., son of the late Leamon Thomas and Magnolia Turner Clayton; and husband of 32 years to the late Ann Lee Clayton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during World War II, where he was wounded on D-Day, and was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by two sons, Mark Clayton of Jacksonville, Fla., and Rick Blackburn of Miami, Fla.; one sister, Ruby Nola of Mechanicsville; a granddaughter, Madlien Brooke Blackburn of Miami; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Clayton was preceded in death by a brother, Wright Clayton; and two sisters, Ethel Clayton and Abbie Flynt. Funeral services were conducted Friday, November 30, in the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Herbert Brown. Graveside services followed in the Clayton Family Cemetery. The family received friends Friday, November 30, 2007 prior to the service at the funeral home. Arrangements are by Strickland Funeral Home, 1314 North Main Street, Roxboro, N.C. 27573.
Linwood Edward Collins, of Mechanicsville, died December 4, 2007. He was a 50 year Masonic Veteran of Richmond Lodge #10, AF & AM. Mr. Collins was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Foster Collins, his parents Arthur Wellington and Ruth Mae Collins, four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his two daughters, Brenda Collins Gay of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Marsha Collins Schlesinger and husband George of Barrington, Rhode Island, two sisters Hazel Bagby and husband Melvin of Mechanicsville, Myrtle C. Childress of Temple Hills, Maryland, and one brother Wilbur E. Collins of Henrico; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren, and his devoted friend of many years, Mrs. Lucille Shoemaker. Family received friends at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, Rt. 301 & Shady Grove Road, Wednesday, December 5, 2007. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 6, at the funeral home. Graveside services were held at Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Broadus Church, 5351 Pole Green Road Mechanicsville, Va. 23116.
John Daniel “Jack” Harvey, 86, of the Masonic Home of Virginia, passed away Sunday, December 2, 2007. He was preceded in death in 1984 by his daughter, Cynthia Irene Harvey Stone and is survived by his wife, Betty A. Harvey; son, James Travis Harvey and wife, Catherine, of Naperville, Ill.; son-in-law, Thomas Melvin Stone Sr.; sister, Beulah Lee Harvey Couch; seven grandchildren, Thomas Melvin Stone Jr., Cynthia Lynn Stone D’Amato, John Conley Stone, Courtney Eileen Harvey Adams, Matthew Travis Harvey, Christopher Andrew Harvey and Michael Edward Harvey; as well as seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Harvey was a WWII Navy veteran, a member of Metropolitan Masonic Lodge No. 11 AF&AM, Scottish Rite and the Greeters Unit of the Acca Temple Shrine. Family received friends Wednesday December 5, 2007 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., with a Masonic Service following. Funeral services were held Thursday, December 6, 2007 at the Mechanicsville Chapel. Graveside services were held at Union Hill Baptist Church Cemetery at Concord, Va. at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, P. O. Box 9217, Richmond, Va. 23227.
Dennis Wayne Jackson, 47, of Richmond, met our Lord Saturday, December 1, 2007. He was preceded in death by his parents, James E. Jackson and Betty A. Jackson. He is survived by his wife of eight years, Deborah Susan Jackson; sisters, Cyndi Chorinos (Tom), Judy Boykin (Phil), and Lorie Owens (Mark); brother, Michael Caudle; uncle, Walter E. Jackson Sr.; several nieces, nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law. The family received friends Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at the Mechanicsville Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where a memorial service was held Wednesday, December 5, 2007. Graveside services private.
Elizabeth Virginia Pearce, 88, of Richmond, Va. passed away Thursday, November 28, 2007 at C.J.W. Hospital. Wife of the late William Myton Pearce, Mrs. Pearce was born January 23, 1919 in Washington, D.C. and was the daughter of the late John and Amy Holcer. She retired from the Montgomery County, Maryland Police Department. She is survived by her son, William Pearce and wife, Cheryl, of Mechanicsville; and daughter, Patricia Pink, of Richmond, Va. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Keith Pearce, Kimberly Sauer, Kevin Pearce, Cathy Pink; and five great-grandchildren, Courtney Pearce, Kyle Pearce, Samantha Sauer, Victoria Pearce and Chase Echavarria. A memorial service was held Sunday, December 2, 2007 at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 1101 Forest Ave., Richmond, Va. Graveside services followed at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, 1401 Patterson Ave., Richmond, Va. The family suggests expressions of sympathy may be made in her name in the form of a contribution to the American Diabetes Association.
Doris Morgan Shrader, 82, of the Masonic Home of Virginia, passed away Thursday, November 29, 2007. She is survived by her husband, Reuben S. Shrader; her sister, Constance M. Miller; two sisters-in-law, Janice Tyler and Hazel Morgan; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Shrader was retired from the C&P Telephone Company. She was a member of Chamberlayne Baptist Church, Past Matron of Holly Chapter No. 27 O.E.S. and was a member of Blanche Spencer Chapter No. 11 O.E.S. The family received friends Sunday December 2, 2007 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road. Funeral services were held Monday, December 3, 2007 in the Masonic Home Chapel. Graveside services were held in the Forest Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Chamberlayne Baptist Church or the Masonic Home of Virginia.
