Clara Rice Brooks, 87, of Norfolk, formerly of Hanover, passed away Monday, December 17, 2007 at Thornton Hall Nursing Home. She is survived by one sister, Minnie Anne Craft and husband, James, of Norfolk; and one brother, Russell Lee Rice and wife, Evelyn, of Sandston; as well as a host of nieces and nephews. The family received friends Wednesday December 19, 2007 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where funeral services were held Thursday, December 20, 2007. Graveside services were held at Signal Hill Memorial Park.
Nevaeh Rose Gill, of King William, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, December 16, 2007. She is survived by her parents, Disiree Gooden and Kenneth A. Gill; sister, Aurora E. Gill. The family received friends Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where funeral services were held Thursday December 20, 2007. Graveside services Saturday December 21, 2007 at McNeally Cemetery, Hendricks, W.Va.
William Cornelius “Buck” Schermerhorn III died suddenly Tuesday at his home in Glen Allen. He was 77 and a lifelong resident of Glen Allen. Mr. Schermerhorn was a graduate of Glen Allen High School and a 1955 graduate of Randolph-Macon College. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Schermerhorn served in the Army Corps of Engineers in Korea. Mr. Schermerhorn retired from a 37-year career with Virginia Power in 1992. Throughout his life, he actively enjoyed the outdoors, playing tennis, hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, bird watching and gardening on a grand scale. Mr. Schermerhorn loved games and was an accomplished chess player and adept at crosswords. He was active in Boy Scouts of America for many years, serving as scoutmaster for Boy Scout troop 751 at Greenwood United Methodist Church. During the 15 years of his retirement, Mr. Schermerhorn and his wife, Edith, traveled annually to beautiful places in the United States, such as Maine, Nevada, Colorado, the Dakotas and California. Mr. Schermerhorn loved to drive and loved to listen to bluegrass music. Even after experiencing a stroke in September 2006 that affected his left arm and his vision, Mr. Schermerhorn continued to live his life enthusiastically. He continued a lifelong passion for reading mysteries, thrillers and histories. Mr. Schermerhorn loved his extended family and was happy to have spent recent weekends in the company of his wife, kids, grandkids and friends. He is survived by Edith, his wife of 53 years, and his children and their families: Alice Raines and her husband, Bob, of Stafford County; John Schermerhorn and his wife, Kathy, of Montpelier; Will Schermerhorn and his wife, Robin, of Vienna; and Stan Schermerhorn and his wife, Nicole, of Glen Allen. He is also survived by grandchildren and their families: Bobby Raines and his wife, Kim, of Charlottesville; Cecily Raines of Glen Allen; William Raines and his wife, Amanda, of Fredericksburg; siblings Beth and Brian Schermerhorn of Montpelier; siblings Erica and Mason Schermerhorn of Vienna; and siblings Luke and Ellen Schermerhorn of Glen Allen. Lillian May Gammon Seay, 98, of Mechanicsville, died Monday, December 17, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, William James Seay; and daughter, Ellen S. Ball. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy S. Barret of Mechanicsville; three grandchildren, Robin E. Ball of Highland Springs, Robert V. Ball Jr. and wife, Carolyn, of Providence Forge, Tracy Smith and husband, Vincent, of Mechanicsville; three great-grandchildren, Robert Edward Ball, Anna Marie Ball, Samuel Scott Partridge; and many nieces and nephews. Appreciation is extended to Mrs. Seay’s caregivers at Elizabeth Adam Crump Manor. The family received friends Thursday, December 20, 2007 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Graveside services private. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2008 in the chapel at Sheltering Arms Hospital, Mechanicsville.
