Mary Hott “Polly” Briggs, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008. Mrs. Briggs was predeceased by her husband, Stanley Ray Briggs; son, George W. Balsinger; and two infant children, Dennis and Angel Marie Briggs. Mrs. Briggs is survived by her daughters, Patsy Ann Briggs and Mary Jo-Anne Briggs, both of Richmond; stepdaughter, Nanette B. House of Hopewell; two grandsons, Robert House and his wife, Barbara, of Colonial Heights, Jeffrey House of Hopewell; one granddaughter, Kassie Balsinger of Ashville, N.C.; and devoted niece, Jo-Anne B. Martin of Richmond. The family received friends at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, where services were also held Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008. Graveside services were held in Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Pole Green Church of Christ.
Rachel Clark, 86, of Champlain, Va., died on Feb. 1, 2008 at her residence. Survivors include three sons, Edward, Alvin and Glen Clark, Port Royal, Va.; two daughters, Barbara Johnson and Carolyn Alsop; 27 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Fleet Clark, Newtown, Va., and Corine Darby, Tappahannock, Va. A funeral service was held Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 at New Liberty Baptist Church, Beazley, Va., with Rev. W.T. Carter officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. William S. Clark Jr., 80, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Tucker Clark and brothers, Roy and Clyde Clark. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and John Stultz and Julie and Phil Minor; stepson, Danny Clark; brother, Amos Clark. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jonathan Stultz, Ryan Lumpkin, Will Minor, April Blanks, Courtney Clark; and a host of great-grandchildren. The family received friends Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where services were held Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008. Graveside services were held in Signal Hill Memorial Park.
Hannah Abigail Darby, was born June 22, 2007 and went home as an Angel with the Lord on Feb. 6, 2008. Though we had your life dreamt out from your first word (Dad, right?) to your first step, to your first day of school, and prepared ourselves for when you would leave us for college and then your wedding day, we never thought God would need our angel this soon. Your laugh, smile and love will continue to be with us and all of those that you touched. “We were all H.A.D.” Hannah is survived by her parents, Martin and Carla Darby of Doswell; her grandparents, Carlton and Cheryl Owen; her aunt, Casey, all of Mechanicsville; as well as her family and friends of Hanover Public Schools, Special Olympics, and First Baptist Church of Ashland, where a celebration of Hannah’s life was held on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to the First Baptist Church Child Development Center, 800 Thompson Street, Ashland, Virginia 23005.
George “Brinkley” Mantlo, age 82, of Mechanicsville, Hanover tomato farmer and retired postal carrier, died Feb. 9, 2008. He was the son of Dick and Georgie Mantlo, and is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mildred “Puchie” G. Mantlo; a sister, Mrs. Delia Hummel. Family received friends at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville, Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008. Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 11, 2008 at Black Creek Baptist Church. Graveside services were held at the church cemetery. Mr. Mantlo was a lifetime member and deacon of Black Creek Baptist Church. Thanks to Heritage Green for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Black Creek Baptist Church Building Fund.
Catherine Atkinson Peatross, lovingly known as “Miss Kitty”, left us in peace on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008. She is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Thomas Bernard Peatross; daughter, Bonnie and her husband, Richard Jackson, M.D.; son and daughter-in-law, John and Dawn; sister, Dorothy Smith; and brother, John Atkinson. She was a member of the Gold Band Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church. The family received friends Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Services were held Saturday Feb. 9, 2008 in the chapel of First Baptist Church, Monument Avenue and Boulevard. Graveside services were held at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Barbara Cecil Robben, of Mechanicsville, departed this life on Feb. 6, 2008. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Joseph G. Robben; two children, Joseph Wayne Robben and wife, Sherie, Cynthia Robben Kelly and husband, Kevin; three grandchildren, Joseph Wayne Robben Jr. and wife, Dawn, Samantha Marie Kelly, and Kevin Joseph Kelly; two sisters, Jean C. Rowe and Brenda C. Slaughter; four brothers, Joseph F., Emmett W., Loran T., and Bruce W. Cecil. The family received friends at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville, Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 and where a Christian Wake was held Friday Feb. 8, 2008. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008 at the Catholic Church of the Redeemer, Mechanicsville. Graveside services were held at Washington Memorial Park. Barbara served as a volunteer at Memorial Regional Medical Center.
Lillian Elizabeth Throckmorton Slater “Little Nannie”, 86, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord Sunday Jan. 27, 2008. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lillian Throckmorton, and her husband of 60 years, Edward Slater Jr. She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Ann Fontaine, Betty & Harold Flippo, Jane & Earl Madison, Son Ed Slater III, son-in-law, Ed Johnson, all of Mechanicsville; 14 Grandchildren Michael, Jimmy and David Fontaine, Rosie Szabo, Margie Pearson, Bobby Scott And Rebecca Flippo, James III & Joey Hazelwood, Bobby Johnson, Tiffany Morgan, Christie Elizabeth Johnson Finch, and Nikkie Cousins; 25 Great-grandchildren; And numerous other family members and friends. Mrs. Slater retired with 28 years of service from F. W. Woolworth and Company on Broad Street, and was a member of Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church. She was a kind, Loving, gentle person and she loved animals. She was “Little Nannie” to all that knew and loved her. She was laid to rest on Jan. 31, 2008 in Oakwood Cemetery. She will be deeply missed by all.
