James Marion Gordon, 88, of Mechanicsville, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2007. He is survived by his son, Herbert T. Gordon and wife, Pam of Chesapeake, Va.; daughter, Barbara G. Whitecotton and husband, George, of Montpelier, Va.; brother, Robert N. Gordon of Baltimore, Md., sister, Carolyn Quinnell of Federal Way, Wash.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Gordon was a retired employee of Virginia Transit Company. Family received friends June 14, 2007 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home where services were held Friday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

William Jennings Gouldin, 87, of Mechanicsville, passed away June 14, 2007. Bill attended Virginia Tech, served in the U.S. Army during WWII, retired as an engineer after 40 years with the RF&P Railroad, was past owner of Strange’s Florist, and a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church and Meridian Lodge No. 284, AF&AM. He was the son of the late Thomas Milton and Linda Andrews Gouldin of Caroline County, Va. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Nancy Crutchfield Gouldin; and four sons, William J. Gouldin Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Rockville, Va., Thomas M. Gouldin, Don and his wife, Bonnie, of Mechanicsville, Va., fraternal twins, Cary T. Gouldin of Henrico, Va. and Craig E. Gouldin and his wife, Lisa, of King William, Va. Bill leaves the twinkle in his eye, his devoted daughter, Jane Ritchie Gouldin Watkins and her husband, Tscharner, of Midlothian, Va. Bill was blessed with nine grandchildren, Haley G. Sims, 1 Lt. William J. Gouldin III, Peyton C. Gouldin, Evan M. Gouldin, Kent M. Gouldin, Margaret E. Gouldin, Ried D. Watkins IV, Mason T. Watkins and K. Nicole Gouldin. Bill is survived by two brothers, John and George Gouldin; and his sisters, Dorothy Gouldin, Mary Goebel, Martha Slusher, Louise Kegley, Linda Vinson and Jean Lynch. Bill was preceded in death by three brothers, Milton, Francis and Richard Gouldin. The family received friends Friday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road, Mechanicsville, Va. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 16 at Walnut Grove Baptist Church, 7046 Cold Harbor Road, Mechanicsville, Va. Interment in the church cemetery. Memorials can be made to the name of Walnut Grove Living Memorial Fund, 7046 Cold Harbor Road, Mechanicsville, Va.

Fay Dunford Parks, 74, of Richmond, passed away Monday, June 11, 2007. She is survived by two sons, Daniel G. Parks and wife, Sharon, and W. Larry Parks and wife, JoAnn; two daughters, Debra Leib and Pamela Chenault; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Dingus; brother, Charlie Dunford; also several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Parks was a retired employee of Thalhimers Department Store. The family received friends Thursday, June 14 at the Mechanicsville Chapel, Bennett Funeral Home, where services were held Friday. Entombment Washington Memorial Park.

Lillian Frances Moore Powell, 85, of Henrico, widow of Walter Swanson and James L. Powell Sr., died June 12, 2007. She is survived by her children, Brenda Swanson of Henrico, Juanita Wrenn of Maryland, and James L. Powell Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Ohio; as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Her brother, C. Earl Moore Sr. of Chesterfield, died earlier the same day. Mrs. Powell is also survived by her brother’s children, Ruth Carter, Earl Moore Jr., Al Moore, and Jon Moore; as well as her brother’s widow, Lillian Paul Moore. The family received friends Friday, June 15 at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home. Graveside services were held Saturday, June 16 at Washington Memorial Park. Mary Alice Yoder of Mechanicsville, Va. passed away Thursday, June 7, 2007 at Heritage Green of Hanover after a two-year battle with lung and brain cancer. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, E. Duane Yoder; three sons and wives, Timothy Yoder and Fifi of Mechanicsville, Christopher Yoder and Chia-Wel of Washington, D.C. Jeffrey Yoder and Marketa of Bristow, Va. She is survived by five grandchildren, Samuel, Nicholas, Maria, Alexander and Noah. She is survived by her brother, Paul Sieber of Champaign, Ill., and sister-in-law, Martha Sieber; and sister-in-law Loraine Sieber of Freeport, Ill; also surviving, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Boyd and Katie Sieber of Freeport, Ill.; two brothers, Floyd and Samuel; and sister, Grace. Mary was born near Dakota, Ill., and attended Dakota schools. She always enjoyed telling people she was an Illinois farm girl. Mary received her nursing degree from the former Deaconess Hospital, now Freeport Memorial, Freeport, Ill. She loved to work in the surgical unit of the hospital. Her last employment for 20 years was at Fort Wayne, Indiana, Parkview Hospital. Her greatest pleasure was working in her garden with flowers of all kinds, traveling was also a part of her life, visiting four other continents. After her retirement, she worked as a volunteer in a maple sugar camp showing school children how sap from maple trees became syrup. She also served as a hospice volunteer and as a volunteer for the church helping wherever needed. Mary accepted Christ as her Savior in her youth. She was a member of First Mennonite Church, Richmond, Va. The family received friends Saturday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at the First Mennonite Church, 601 E. Parham Rd. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Mennonite Church.

I feel sad to see how people disappear, but we have to understand that death is only a door to another world which all of us have to open, sooner or later.
