William Junius Atkins, “Preacher”, went home to be with the Lord after a lengthy illness. Blankenship Jr., “Herb”, went to be with the Lord Aug. 19, 2010 with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife and lifelong partner of 42 years, Vera. He is also survived by three sons and a daughter, several grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. We lost our father, friend, and mentor. A celebration of his life was held Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010 at the Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the family to offset funeral expenses. Billy Bolinskey, 73, of Mechanicsville, died peacefully in his sleep Aug. 28, 2010. He is survived by his sisters, Paulette Roccograndi (Anthony) and Rosemary Brooke (Larry); a brother, Patrick Bolinskey (Linda); nieces, Jacqueline Lund, Christy Bolinskey, Dr. Desiree Brooke and Kim Bolinskey; nephews, John Roccograndi, Kevin and Sean Bolinskey; a great-niece, Nicole Roccograndi; and a great-nephew, Mason Roccograndi. Billy was born April 20, 1937 in the mountains of southwest Virginia. He was the oldest of seven and graduated third in his high school class, which he always said wasn’t too hard considering that there were only ten people in his class. That was always one of his favorite jokes to tell. He went on to graduate with a degree in chemistry from Virginia Tech. Billy had an amazing love of baseball, and it was nothing unusual to find him any summer day reading and watching numerous games at one time. He will always be remembered for his infectious laugh. Breeden, 81, of Glen Allen, went to be with his Lord on Aug. 22, 2010. He was born Nov. 27, 1928 in Louisville, Ky. He served his country in the United States Army and retired from Reynolds Metals Company in 1993. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, LaVerne Bradley Breeden; his daughter, Sharon Breeden Will and her husband, Gregory E. Will; and his son, Kenneth Bradley Breeden and his wife, Susan Denman Breeden; as well as two sisters, Doris Breeden Neal and Nadine Breeden Huber; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was an avid reader and traveler, which took him all over the world. He loved his family. He was active in his church, especially the Clothes Closet. He will be missed by many friends and family. Louis Laymon Cargile Jr., “Buddy”, of Mechanicsville, born in Natchez, Miss. on July 6, 1927, the son of the late Louis L. Cargile Sr. and Gladys McCrea Cargile, passed away on Friday, Aug. 27, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Lydia Ann McKay Cargile, and is survived by one brother-in-law, two nephews, one niece, several great-nieces, and many devoted friends whose love and support were greatly appreciated by him. Buddy attended LSU before enlisting in the Marine Corps serving as a cryptographer under the Chief of Naval Operations during the occupation of Japan, China and Guam. He was recalled into service for the Korean War to help rebuild the 2nd Marine Division. Upon leaving the Marines, he went to work for Government Intelligence in Washington, D.C. leaving in 1958 to work at the Reynolds Metals Corp H.Q. in Richmond, retiring in 1985 after 27 years of service. A Mason for 60 years, he belonged to the Concordia #305 F&A.M. in Vadalia, La.; Washington Henry #344 A.F.&A.M.; Manchester Royal Arch #48, and in 1974 was Worshipful Master of Hellinic #249 A.F.&A.M. which was later absorbed into Metropolitan #11. Raymond Monroe Doggett, 63, of Glen Allen, departed this earth Monday, Aug. 23, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Hampton Doggett; his sister, Barbara Blanton; and his brothers, Henry and Bobby Doggett. Edison Lincoln Dowdy Jr., 66 of Glen Allen, passed away Friday, Aug. 27, 2010 at Retreat Hospital in Richmond. Eddie, or “Rowdy” as he was called by his close friends, lost his battle with cancer. Formerly of Pearisburg, Va., Eddie was a second generation jeweler and owned and operated Dowdy’s Jewelers Inc. in Pearisburg for the last 25 of its 44 years in business. He was also founder of NAPA Auto Parts Inc., in Pearisburg. He was a member of the Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Glen Allen. He was known in Corvette and Harley-Davidson circles for his 1963 Corvette and his 1950 designed Road King Classic. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Alice Williams Dowdy of Glen Allen; one son, Tony Dowdy and wife, Anne, of Glen Allen; one daughter, Elizabeth D. Skaggs and husband, Mitch, of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Edison Drew Lagan, Stephanie Anne Dowdy, and Caroline Grace Dowdy; and also his furry friends, Abbie, Chloe, Brogan, SamiJo, Lillie, and Jazz. William Henry Grindstaff, “Cowboy”, born June 10, 1935, passed away Aug. 26, 2010. He was preceded in death by his son, William Roy Grindstaff; his parents, Henry and Maggie Grindstaff; his two sisters, Lena Bass and Blanche Taylor. Mason, 86, of Ashland, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Mason; six sisters, Catherine, Molly, Gertrude, Bertha, Gladys and Rosa; two brothers, Lucien and Ford; two children, Junius and John. After receiving her education in the Hanover County School System, she worked at the Ashland Shirt Factory for many years. Later she retired from Best Products after 30 years of service. Mattie loved her church family! She was an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Ashland. Over the years, she held various positions including Willing Worker, treasurer and usher. Mattie also loved her family. She was known affectionately as “Mama” to some, but “Grandma” to all. She loved all of her grandchildren, but especially her boys. She had an open door policy to almost anyone in need. She used to say, “Everyone needs a place to stay and eat.” Left to cherish her memory is one daughter, Joyce Harris; one sister, Alice Taliaferro; four grandsons, Edward Jr., (Vanessa), Wade (Kimberly), Andre and Cedric; one granddaughter, Cassandra; 12 great- grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and many friends. Novelene Howard Shroyer, 86, of Covenant Woods, Mechanicsville, widow of Dr. Donald C. Shroyer, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010. She is survived by her son, Michael Linden Shroyer and his wife, Debra, of Utah; her daughter, Suzanne Shroyer Harris and her husband, Stephen, of North Carolina; her former daughter-in-law, Mary E. Shroyer; three grandchildren, Heather S. Dowdy, Laurel S. Hanke and M. Linden Shroyer II; five great-grandchildren; and her sister, Lila H. Irby and her husband, Moreland R. Irby Jr. She was preceded in death by her brother, Randall R. Howard, and is survived by his children: niece, Sheryl L. Eickelberg, and nephew, Steven R. Howard. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Nancy Virginia Shroyer Bain and her six children. She served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a WAVE. Mrs. Shroyer gave much of her time volunteering at Covenant Woods in various capacities. She was an avid knitter and used her talent to benefit both those she loved and those in need. Neville McLean Staughton Jr., 85 of Mechanicsville, passed away Aug. 26, 2010. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jeannine Dance Staughton; one brother, Harry Staughton and his wife, Lee Staughton; one sister, Jane Staughton Barlow; one daughter, Karen Staughton McNamara and her husband, Gary Wayne McNamara; two sons, Darrell Ray Staughton and Marvin Wayne Staughton; four grandchildren, Misty, Jimmy, Tiffany, Chelsea and her husband, Joe Ferguson; three great-grandchildren, Kalib, Mitchell and Samuel; many beloved nieces and nephews; and his beloved cousin, Josephine in Germany. He was a retired fire captain with the Richmond Fire Bureau with 37 years of service. He was a charter union member of the Richmond Fire Bureau. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving on the USS New York during WWII. He was a member of the VFW Battle Field Post #9808. He was married to the late JoAnn Williams Wyman. Jerry was retired from the United States Postal Service.
