OK, I’ll confess — I was more than a little curious about this group that calls itself the 912 Project. The title stems from the day after the horrors this country experienced on Sept. 11, 2001.

After some phone calls with Mechanicsville resident Laura Glover, she and Laura Alcorn of Henrico came by last Wednesday to talk about their work, goals and next meeting.

The Richmond Patriots formed after talk show host Glenn Beck had a national viewing party on March 13. With about 200 gathering at the Sports Page Bar and Grill, a second location, Nacho Mama’s, had another 100.

Author Tim Cox will meet with the local group at 7 p.m. Saturday at Bass Pro Shops. He wrote “GOOOH” (Get Out Of Our House), a plan to remove career politicians and elect 912 candidates. Alcorn refers to them as “every day citizens.” They invite the public to attend their meetings; there is no admission fee.

Glover said the project is “an effort to unite people on just being Americans. In the past decade, if not more, people have been concerned about which party they’re affiliated with, which politician.” Alcorn quickly interjected that “it’s not politician-oriented.”

“Principles and values-oriented — that’s what the 912 Project is based on,” Glover said. “It is designed to unite Americans on shared values.”

Henrico, Mechanicsville and Southside make up the Richmond Patriots. “Sister” Patriots are Chester and Hopewell, Fredericksburg, and Charlottesville.

The Richmond Patriots group, with 250 active members, expects accountability in government. “Let’s just have some honesty with where the money’s being spent,” Glover said. “If you’re dissatisfied with something, here’s how you can do something about it.”
