Going to the candidates debate
By Ken Odor
Oct 16, 2007

If the turnout of both candidates and the crowd for last Tuesday’s AARP sponsored “Meet and Greet” function is any indication, interest in local government and how its representatives are selected is alive and well in Hanover.
It’s so alive that in two of the magisterial districts two challengers have appeared to do battle with the incumbent.
When the board is seated next January, it could look quite different from the current board, or virtually the same.
There will be at least one new face, since Ashland supervisor Tim Ernst is not running for reelection, and three political veterans are vying for his seat.
Are any of the incumbents likely to be turned out to pasture?
In local elections it’s always problematic to figure, since there are normally no polls to consult before the one on Election Day.
That’s what makes these races so interesting.
We’ll continue to follow the campaigns right up to Nov. 6, and plan to post the results on our web site as soon as they are known.
And if you are holding your breath for the Local to issue endorsements in the supervisor races - don’t.  You’ll pass out.
I can’t think of a time when the endorsement of a newspaper had the slightest effect on how I cast my vote, and the Local has a tradition of not endorsing in local races. We aren’t going to break with that tradition this time.
Doesn’t mean we might not flex our mighty editorial muscles in some future contest, just not this time around.
We do hope to provide fair and accurate coverage to help readers make up their own minds.
To that end, we look forward to your letters to the editor on the election, and any other topic of interest to our readers for that matter.
Just keep them short and to the point, so we can publish as many as possible.
And remember, we need a daytime phone and an address, along with a signature, in order for letters to be published.

9/11 cartoon confuses some

We ran a cartoon last week picturing two persons talking about 9/11 that was evidently misinterpreted by some of our readers (a sign of a bad cartoon, since it’s message should be clear).
The cartoon, with its picture of a child holding a photo, was meant to debunk the idea that 9/11 is old news.
For those who lost loved ones, it will never be old news.
And for the future of the country, the event is just as relevant as ever.
In the future we’ll try to make sure the meaning of the cartoons is clear.
