Good news is no news…

That’s seems to be the way it is with news out of Iraq.

Reuters reported last weekend that 19 U. S. service men had been killed in May, the lowest monthly total since the war began.

That seems like big news to me, but I don’t recall seeing it on the front page of any newspaper.

And recently I read another article in which the current CIA chief said Al Qaeda in Iraq was on the defensive in Iraq and throughout the Islamic world. That didn’t get much attention either.

But let’s just imagine the May total had been 119 U. S. fatalities, and CIA chief Hayden had warned that Al Qaeda was on the offensive, rather than suffering dwindling success and support.

Don’t you know that the headlines would have been screaming at you from the front page of every newspaper and website!

One thinks back to the opposition to the “surge” and the abuse heaped on General Petraeus during his first visit to Capitol Hill and all the attendant publicity.

Now it seems the U.S. may be on the verge of winning both the war in Iraq and the battle with Al Qaeda.

The question is, will anyone ever hear about it?
