Hanover is a great place to call home

While that headline comes as no surprise, a citizen survey of Hanover County residents backs up the claim. During last Wednesday’s regular meeting of the Hanover County Board of Supervisors, Marilyn Blake, assistant county administrator, updated the board about the 2009 survey.

Topping the positive news is that 96 percent of residents said the county is an excellent or good place to live, with 95 percent saying the overall quality of life is excellent or good. But, that’s not all.

Citizen education and emergency management preparedness: 34 percent rate excellent or good and 48 percent don’t know.

Employment opportunities:: 30 percent excellent or good and 23 percent don’t know.

Speed of growth: 39 percent much or somewhat too slow, 38 percent don’t know.

As far as safety issues, 47 percent said they felt very safe/somewhat safe in Hanover’s shopping areas after dark, while 32 percent responded with somewhat unsafe/very unsafe, neither unsafe nor unsafe.

To aid citizens in connecting with their government, Hanover Access News (HAN) is found on the county Web site, http://www.co.hanover.va.us/. Want to become involved? Then visit http://www.HanoverVolunteers.org.

No doubt about it, you have spoken and we’re glad we live here.

Etc.

+ Congratulations to G. Ed Via III, Ashland District, and Deborah B. Coats, Mechanicsville District, who moved into the two top positions on the Board of Supervisors last week as chairman and vice chairman. They took office in January 2008, having been elected to their first terms in November 2007. By the way, John E. Gordon Jr. was most gracious in his outgoing remarks.
