Praying for our president
I am writing this letter in response to Raymond Germeroth’s Jan. 20 letter concerning the separation of church and state. I agreed with much of Mr. Germeroth’s commentary about the founding of our country; however, I was disturbed by many of his comments regarding President Obama.
I Timothy 2:1-2 states: “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
Instead of being so adamant about tearing down President Obama, I encourage him to pray that God will bless him with wisdom, favor and guidance concerning the decisions he makes regarding our country.
As Christians, we need to be intercessors for our local, state and national leaders and prayer on their behalf is important whether we like them or not.
Also, it is important to remember the decisions he makes impacts everyone in this country.
When he took the oath of office last January, President Obama inherited a country in the midst of an economic crisis, two wars and the contempt of many countries around the world.
Given the state this country was in before he came to office, I am amazed how people blame all of our problems on President Obama. For example, Mr. Germeroth blames him for the tragedy at Fort Hood and the possible terrorist plot on Christmas Day.
How quickly we forget that September 11 happened just months after President Bush took the oath of office!
I found it rather interesting that Mr. Germeroth is so quick to judge President Obama as the most incompetent president in our history after only one year in office.
I wonder if his opinion is based on the decisions President Obama has made or the fact that he is the first African American president in our country’s history.
I sensed the roots of bitterness and prejudice in Mr. Germeroth’s letter. I urge him to remember being a Christian means to be Christ-like, and that Christ walked in love towards all.

A blessed community
I am writing to let you all know that Hanover is truly a great community!
In these difficult times we have been blessed with the generosity of others in our community.

Each Christmas the Case Management /Supports Coordination Department connects interested individuals, organizations and churches with the individuals we serve who have no family and/ or who are in need.
This year, under the coordination of Darcy Umstead, support coordinator, 13 sponsors assisted a total of 37 individuals.
We would like to thank the following sponsors for their generous donations: The Church of Redeemer, employees of the Virginia Auditor of Public Accounts Office, St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Lee-Davis High School’s Interact Club, Lee-Davis High School Girls Basketball Team, Ashland Presbyterian Church, Randolph-Macon College’s Theta Chi Fraternity and Alumni, Glynis Holcomb, Florence Watt, The Resource Connection, Ashland Veterinary’s Hospital, Erin Pittman, and First Baptist Church of Ashland.

Supervisor paves the way
Yesterday (letter dated Feb. 2, 2010) I called Elton Wade at home to ask who I could contact about the snow VDOT (Virginia Department of Transportation) had piled alongside my mailbox (and driveway — which I cleared myself, enough to get my car out).
He was kind enough to offer to call
today for me and said he would get back to me.
Much to my surprise, he called me at work this morning to let me know he had driven to my house, saw the problem and dug a path himself to my mailbox, so our mail-lady could deliver my mail today You could have knocked me down with a feather!
Next day service and hand-delivered!
VDOT, the Post Office and for that matter UPS/FedEx should take notice.
There are public servants out there that do what they say and say what they mean. Quite a rarity in these times.
Thanks to Mr. Wade for a job well done!
Best wishes from a grateful citizen.
