I can still see him, rising to address the Hanover Board of Supervisors on yet another zoning case.
He may have moved slowly making his way to the podium, as one does when one reaches their 90s, but Eugene “Bud” McCaul’s presentations were the product of a mind of a far younger man.
McCaul passed away last week, at the age of 91.
Brief and clear, they made it easier for a reporter like myself, largely unschooled in zoning issues, to understand the case.
Always delivered with professionalism and courtesy, they were a pleasure to listen to.
He was something to see, and to admire - a man who loved his work and kept on doing it decades after most folks have retired.
Although I did not know him personally, while interviewing for the story on page 4, I found that my impressions were often the same as those who did.
A fair and honest gentleman, he was respected by those he worked for and by the community.
He will be missed.
