No one could have said it any better than the writer of the “Loophole” column reprinted on this page.
The investigation that started out as an inquiry into how a mentally unstable student was able to perpetrate the massacre at Virginia Tech, has become grist for the gun control lobby’s mill.
Since Cho obtained his firearms by filling out all the appropriate forms required by law at a Roanoke gunshop, attention focused properly, at first, on how mental health information could be included in the background checks.
But before it was over, recommendations that would have had absolutely no chance of preventing the massacre were included in the report.
It seems there is simply no stopping the steamroller of public opinion that favors an ever more intrusive “Nanny State.”
Maybe what’s needed is a more accurate label for the movement that as an article of faith believes individual citizens cannot take care of themselves.
I’ve been thinking about such a label for a long time. Here’s one I like:
“Fascism with a Friendly Face.” It has a nice alliterative quality. Rolls right off the tongue. Not all that threatening, right?
But it’s what we’ll all be living under eventually if we don’t change our ways. If we don’t look at each new proposed limitation on individual liberty proposed at any level of government with a critical eye, and reject each one when they do no more than satisfy political correctness, while at the same time restricting freedom.
